Guess this is as good of a spot as any to post NIL junk. Read this morning that 10 Oklahoma basketball players have a deal with a local Cadillac dealer. They each have a vehicle at their disposal to drive in the fall and spring. Don't we play these guys? Maybe they will all drive to the game. Betcha they have no clue as to East Coast parking fees are.

apnews.com/article/dartmouth-union-ncaa-basketball-players-2fd912fade62ffd81218a6dc91461962With Dartmouth unionizing, aka as treated as employees, they have maybe found a new partner in their endeavor, the IRS. - welcome to the world of withholding taxes, DBL and workers comp - Ivies don't offer "scholarships" but they find $$ to get students thru various other scholarships, grants, etc. Interesting to see if those are now going to be taxable, if the student would not had gotten the $ if they could not dribble. - welcome to union dues - the one player wanted to unionize to help pay for medical coverage for injuries. Welcome to medical insurance - you think your union plan pays 100% of your expenses??? do you think medical insurance is free??? If the school covers it, and you are an employee, there are still tax consequences to having pre-tax benefits (sometimes) - for schools that offer scholarships, will tuition scholarships now become taxable??? - I say get rid of the "free education" stuff anyways. Just call it for what it is - minor league teams sponsored by a specific school. Class Attendance at a power conference for a revenue sport is already probably non existent anyways. See SU BB players years ago getting work done for them, non existent courses at NC, etc. The NCAA painted themselves into a corner long time ago profiting off of players backs. However, instead of a controlled and reasonable plan in place, we now have the Wild Wild West. I can't remember where i read it, but one SEC school's football players now make a minimum of $71K each!! I said about 10 years ago the NCAA would split into two D1 Tiers, and I think it is about to happen in the next two years. Superconferences will leave the NCAA. They do not need it. And then there will be everybody else in D1. THere will still be some $ for schools like us (cable and live feeds still need content) but who knows what those $ will look like.

Saban complaining about NIL is like Ronald McDonald talking about how hamburgers are unhealthy KC, you make great points usually but you drink a lot of cool aid. Saban was not complaining about NIL. He was giving his opinion on some of the reasons why he retired/quit — the change in the way the players think and act does not suit many coaches. Does it suit Mark Schmidt? Bama would have continued to win championships with Saban as coach. It’s the reason many successful, veteran college bball coaches are hanging it up. They do not want to adapt to this new way. How can you coach players who are in this mindset? Yes coaches can leave for a better paying job anytime but they are professionals. Student athletes should not be professionals — but they are.

It falls on deaf ears when it comes from Saban... a 72 year old who engaged in "professional" recruiting practices under the table for 50 years, talking about why he retired. Guys like Saban are the very reason why NIL exists and why the college sports landscape has changed

KC, as usual you missed my point. Blaming Saban for the demise of society proves that. And John Calapari sucks too. I get it but that’s not my point.
Saban’s quote applies to every program in D1 bball and fball. He is saying what all coaches are thinking and have said when they exit.
Saban’s comments fell on deaf ears so much so that it’s the top story in every sports media site and broadcast program. Why? Because everyone knows it’s true.
Paying players under the table did not ruin college athletics. Opening up the NIL and portal can of worms will or did.

No changes are going to be made because Nick Saban, who benefitted $$$$ from a long career of paying players now says paying players is bad. Lots of problems with NIL but the old plan of the Alabama's & LSUs of the world paying players under the table all they want while the NCAA sanctions St. Bonaventure instead and nearly killing our program, was not better.

The only way I see to fix NIL is if players are willing to sign multi year NIL deals especially with smaller schools. If we’re going to give you a bunch of money to come to this school and for us at least give us the assurance that you aren’t going to bolt at the first high lever more lucrative offer you receive.
