Very disappointing season. I’m trying to move on immediately. It’s a really big off-season. What do you guys want to see?
Big question mark is Venning. He walked on senior night. While his production would be missed, and I think he has another level, I wouldn’t be that disappointed if he left.
Aside from that, my big off-season questions:
Can Luc be the starting PG or do they need to find someone (I think they need to find someone)? Has Barry earned a starting role or do they need a transfer 3, on top of a transfer 2? (I think he has)
Here’s my way-too-early wish for a rotation next season:
5: Brown (25-30) Martinez or newcomer (10-15 4: Assa (30) Thompson (10) 3: Evans (30) Thompson (10) 2: Transfer (30-35) Rose (5-10) 1: Transfer (25-35) Luc or newcomer (5-15)
I’d like to see what Thompson can offer. We need an entirely new backcourt. If you can add a 3rd transfer, get an athletic wing.

Forget the portal. There's a reason they are leaving their previous school. Maybe they are not that good or have bad attitudes. Go with freshman and sophomores. They will develop into a cohesive group. And recruit some players that can shoot.

See Posley, Marcus; Mobley, Matt; Adaway, Jalen; the list goes on

Which is why I want to keep our 2 RS freshmen. But we gotta add transfers this off-season. Sorry

Doubt Luc will be back- the poster from the game thread talking about his brother is very likely Kyrell’s brother. His brother was very active, and critical, on Twitter the last 2 years. A certain level of frustration is understandable. Seems like a kid with a good head on his shoulders. Whatever his choice, nothing but the best for him.

Do not ignore the transfer portal, sometimes a player responds differently to different coaches, Not a perfect science but maybe a chance is warranted.

Whatever we do, we need players who are quicker on the offensive end, and can either create their own shot or get open with movement... lots of great shooters on the current team, but they were relatively slow and thus easy to defend.

I actually think we are a very attractive place for an impact transfer or two to land. Especially guards 1) you know Schmidt will give 30+ minutes. You don’t transfer to sit, so that’s enticing 2) Bonnies are bringing back forwards and big men so you have decent teammates to work with 3) rare chance to take the keys and prove yourself in the A10

Barry should play the 4 and Assa should play the 3.
These 2 guys are why I’m optimistic heading into the offseason. Another Summer of improvement and they will both be ready for bigger roles. Call me crazy, but I think Barry could be a real weapon on offense. As a ball handler and playmaker.
It would be a dagger if either decided to transfer. Talented young wings don’t grow on trees.

Ps Barry absolutely should be a full time starter next season and play as many minutes as he can handle. He’s ready to take that next step in his development. If you can’t see that, you’re blind as a bat. We were a better team with him on the floor.

But, I agree that he poised to make a big impact next year.

I have to disagree with most of the comments on Barry Evans and Assa. Has the bar gotten a little low here? Barry has more upside at this point because he has the physical skills but needs to develop his offense probably inside the arc. Assa as others have said lacks foot speed which cannot really be developed. He is a spot up shooter off screens. He would be a better asset in an offense that moves the ball better than current Schmidt offenses.

Assa and Barry are exactly the type of players who continue to develop in year 3 and year 4 in our program. They have way more talent than many guys who have bloomed as juniors and seniors. Assa does not lack foot speed — he is hesitant and not as intuitive yet … maybe not fully confident. He also had to fit in with two transfers and a big man who dominate the ball. Assa/Yann was one of the most heavily recruited and offered players in Bona history (4 star offered by UConn, Wake, SU, Miami, VCU, VA Tech, Pitt and more). He has star potential and it’s a matter or more development time. I feel Barry could play the 3 and Assa is a better stretch 4, depending on how ready Kaba, Rose and Thompson are and how they fit. Barry can guard the perimeter and handle the ball. He has quickness and hops. His outside shot is getting better. Assa could add more strength/weight and seems to be a leaper with great hands who has a nose for rebounding. You never know if Schmidt will be comfy playing both guys together for most of the game. My concern is why would Evans stay if he is not promised a starting spot for 30+ minutes. Many programs will welcome him with open arms.

So, Big Cat I respect your posts. I hope I am wrong but I am not seeing it the same way.

While I like both Barry and Assa and see their potential to develop into good dependable A10 players - I have to agree with joe48's assessment of lowering the bar here. Hope I'm wrong because that's pretty much all we've got heading into next season (plus Noel & Chad if he stays).
What's become very apparent to me is our lack of quickness at guard. Teams were pushing us out to nearly half-court with our guards being unable to blow by their defenders and take advantage - resulting in horrible forced shots at the end of the shot clock time and time again. I don't think Coach's offensive sets with the high Post helped much either. We just looked slow and overwhelmed a lot. Honestly - It was hard to watch. We need long athletic wings and strong/quick guards if we are going to compete with the the top half of the A10. Most teams have 3-4 Barry & Assa types that they can throw at us in waves.
Mika and Chuck and Daryl were able to do just OKAY against the defensive pressure - largely due to their experience and savy - but they struggled to consistently break down the defense and either finish at the rim, or create open looks / drop dimes. Problem is - I don't see a Posely, Stockard, Mobley, Adaway, or a Holmes walkin thru that door any time soon. We have been very fortunate to pluck talented Transfers for years now ... Safe to say Mika & Chuck & Daryl did not measure up to their predecessors. We all expected so much more from them - but maybe that's on us for overestimating the talent (drinking the Kool-Aid). Coach and staff really need to be out there beating the bushes to pull-in some key pieces or next year could be 2022-2023 level or worse. Again - Hope I'm wrong, just calling it like I see it ...
