St. Bonaventure will use a nine-person search committee as it pursues a new athletic director.
The university announced the committee Tuesday, and it includes former National Hockey League team executive Gerry Helper, who is also a member of the school’s board of trustees, and Bonnies women’s basketball coach Jim Crowley.
“Finding the best-fit athletics director is incredibly important for St. Bonaventure and I’m confident we have the right team to lead this search,” Dr. Jeff Gingerich, university president, said in a statement posted on the school's website.
The school is in the early stages of finding a successor to Joe Manhertz, who resigned March 22 after 3 1/2 years as Bona’s athletic director. Manhertz’s departure came at the end of a week in which the Bonnies’ men’s basketball team withdrew from consideration for a bid to the National Invitation Tournament. Manhertz faced criticism for the lack of transparency surrounding the decision.

Ryan Clingan and Barb Questa currently serve as Bona's interim co-athletic directors.
Helper, a 1979 Bona graduate, worked with the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators from 1979-2021, most recently as the Predators’ senior vice president. He is also chair of Bona's board of trustees’ athletics committee.
Crowley recently completed his 17th season as coach of the Bonnies women’s basketball program, and his first season since his return to Bona in March 2023 after seven seasons as women’s basketball coach at Providence College.
Crowley is one of two on the committee with ties to the Bonnies’ women’s basketball program, along with Mary Jane Telford, a 1975 Bona graduate and former basketball player who coached the Bonnies for 17 seasons, from 1975-81 and from 1982-93. St. Bonaventure inducted Telford into its athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. She also worked in the university’s admissions and university relations offices.
The committee also includes:
Matrecia James, dean of the School of Business.
Dick Penna, Class of 1968, trustee and partner at Van Ness Feldman, LLP
Mike Pressimone, vice president for advancement
Fr. Larry Ford, O.F.M., trustee and secretary of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Tracy Schrems, faculty athletics representative and assistant professor of adolescence education
Kyle Leslie, director of talent acquisition, HRIS & Employee Services
There was no indication Tuesday whether St. Bonaventure will use a search firm to assist in hiring a new athletic director. The university used a search committee and CarrSports Consulting, an outside search firm, in the process of hiring Manhertz in 2021.
