Griifs shot well against AZ. Half their shots were TREYS making 39%. FGs 43%. Board play killed them - 18. Griffs had 19 turnovers that led to 26 points for AZ. That and the poor rebounding killed them. I’ve heard a few posters take shots at Jim Christian but he is an excellent coach and will have his team ready. Schmidt has had issues getting his team prepared and in the right mindset to play the Griffs. Not sure why. Our guys need to play better.

At one time the Little 3 was a big deal, it’s slow decline started with the arrival of of the Sabres and Braves in the early 70s. The decline accelerated with Bona, Niagara and Canisius joining separate conferences. How significant is the decline? — At its peak during 60’s and early 70’s the Buffalo Aud would be SRO for a 14,000+ arena. — Last Bona game at Koessler Center (capacity 2,196) had 1,903 fans. — For that season, Canisius averaged 866 fans. — This season Alfred game attendance was 2,113. Graduating from Bona in 1991, Woj experienced the Little 3 during its rapid decline. He didn't experience the exciting times of the Little 3 during the 60 and 70s. With financing being a major part of his responsibilities, I wonder if there will be changes made with future Bona and Canisius games. Having less than 2,000 fans at the Koessler Center creates minimal revenue. More money is created for Bona with an exhibition game in the Reilly Center. gogriffs.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2022-23/st-bonaventure/boxscore/8332maacsports.com/stats.aspx?path=mbkb&year=2022

A story in the OTH about the history between Schmidt and Christian notes that of the 18 guys who were on the court for last year’s game, only 3 (Brown and 2 Griffs) will be playing today. So there shouldn’t be any carryover from that ugly disaster. Come on guys, let’s get back to dominating the Griffs and start a trifecta of the Little Three this season, then add UB and Siena for good measure. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Griifs shot well against AZ. Half their shots were TREYS making 39%. Above is my biggest concern. In the last 2 games, which were losses to Canisius. — Last year Canisius shot 50% from 3s. For the season Canisius shot 33.6% from 3s for the season. — Prior season Canisius shot 50% again. For the season Canisius shot 34.7% from 3s for the season. Hopefully we do not have the trifecta with Canisius hot shooting from behind the arc.

There is alumni relations/donations. Buffalo is our largest alumni market so one game a year at NU, UB or CC should be enough. Problem is sometimes we have at least two. Playing in Buff are low-expense games. So if the revenue is minimal it’s probably all profit or break even, as opposed to chartering a plane and spending 2+ days on the road. UB has been a great draw home and on the road vs SBU until they hit the skids. Who knows if NU, CC and UB will ever return to respectability. As I said in my post from earlier today… are we going to get rid of every weak team on our schedule? Who’s knocking on Schmidt’s door begging for an OOC game? Other than a couple “showcase games” or tourneys each season it has been bare bones. I don’t have a problem with that because those P6 games often give us a measuring stick and a chance for a Q1 or Q2 win. Utah State will be a nice matchup for us. Most years Providence is as well (not so much this season). I doubt that removing the Little 3/4 games is a high priority for the staff. You need a handful of traditional/annual games to ply in that make scheduling easier. Maybe Woj can work magic and beef up the schedule. Again, not sure if that is a priority when we turn over the roster every season.

BONNIES opened as 10.5 point favorites, now it is down to 7.5 points.

Home opponents this year:
Canisius: SBU, SIU Edwardsville, Maine, Brown Niagara: Houghton, LIU, St. Francis, Le Moyne Siena: SBU, American, Miami Ohio, Holy Cross, Brown
It is EMBARRASSING for the program that we go on the road to play these types of MAAC programs. We are far and away the best team that any of these three can get home games with. It is time to stop crying poor old Bonaventure and invest some more money to properly schedule. Act like we belong in the Atlantic 10. Who else in our league does this? Play these loser programs neutral, who cares. Just stop going on the road to play MAAC teams.

Especially if we win, then what’s embarrassing about beating teams in their gym? Nothing Besides it’s Baretta’s first year on the job. Let him get to work

bona20 - Bona fans overall want to see games against the Little Three, which have been played for over a hundred years (which I think is the average age of many Bona fans) . To continue playing them, but refusing to play home and home, we’d have to know that they would continue to agree to play in the RC without our playing them in their places. Plus remember that we have a good number of alums in Buffalo who attend those away games. It’s not crying poor old Bonaventure to recognize they might not agree to being strong-armed by us that they agree to only playing in the RC without us agreeing to continuing the home one year, away the next arrangement for them to visit the RC. And unless you want more of CSUN, Mansfield St. and LeMoyne we better have some replacement teams lined up to put butts in the RC seats if Niagara and/or Canisius put their backs up and refuse our demand to change the way the series have been played for decades. I just don’t think we’re in the position to make this demand. The reality is we need visitors fans want to see to sell tickets, particularly season tickets. Gotta listen to your customers.

1. Bob Beretta will have little to no impact on the schedule. Pappano is in charge of it and continues to do a poor job. It is embarrassing that we go to their gym as an Atlantic 10 team win or lose, because nobody in the league goes to play this many poor quality MAAC teams year after year.
2. I always hear about how the alums care so much about Canisius and Niagara, yet when I graduated a few years ago nobody on campus seemed to care about playing them any more than any other game. Also, you don’t need to play games in Buffalo to get alums to come to games. Can’t they just come to the Reilly Center? Just because a few people remember the 60s doesn’t mean we need them to be on the schedule every single year. They could be easily replaced with buy games or home and homes against quality mid-major opponents like Akron, Toledo, or MVC-type teams if we would just be willing to do it.

Duane Thompson with the start and an early 3. Griffs playing with a ton of energy so far. We’re weathering the storm with an equally good start. Let’s keep it up. Huge advantages in height and athleticism.
