I had to sit through a mandatory class with Prof. Gan about 4 or 5 years ago and listen to him constantly criticize the American government and us as a country in general (when this was far from the purpose of the class). The guy constantly uses class time that students pay for to spew propaganda and promote his own agenda. So I'd like a refund myself.
During my four years at Bonas the guy was constantly protesting something. I'm not saying whether his causes were wrong or right, but when you are always protesting something people tend to look at you with the "boy who cried wolf" mentality and you lose credibility. While the faculty probably has some reason to complain and I can understand their frustration, I think they'd be better served having someone else step up to lead their cause and provide quotes to the newspaper. Just not sure if everyone hasn't already tuned Gan out by this point

I would imagine the increased profit margin per wiener is the source of the new found money for the coach's rumored salary. What's next, they're going to give a 6oz cup of Pepsi instead of 8oz?

mcspin: thanks for summarizing your callous view of those actually doing the mission of the university. Is that what Gan's doing? Someone better get the mission changed. What a joke!

OK, so some of you want to travel down this path, lets go for a stroll all of you enrollment and football experts.
Let's start by taking a look at the admissions article recently in the BV. It stated "Campus visits by prospective students are up. 105 prospective students visited the campus in February."
Lets compare the recruiting and visitation numbers SBU would receive if it had a non-scholarship program for the same month. The football staff would get 70-100 visits A WEEK. That would bring in an additional 300-400 ACADEMICALLY QUALIFIED, TUITION PAYING students to the SBU campus.
SURE, keep telling yourselves that a football program would not have a positive impact on enrollment.
I can understand why some of you visionaries would not want a football program at a school that has had financial and enrollment problems on and off for the last 20 years. You want to save the admissions department the embarrassment of knowing the Football staff would recruit more potential students and get more visitations than them.
I have a better idea, since Dr. Backbone seems to have a lot of time on his hands lets put him out on the recruiting trail. Just think of the recruiting pitch. "Mom and dad, send your sons and daughters to SBU and spend $30,000 a year so professors like me can cheat them from getting a great education." Just think of all the potential students he would get flocking to campus. Oh I'm sorry, bad idea. He won't have much time. He'll be protesting the low grade quality of beans at the new Starbucks on campus.
One last note for all you football fans, the UIW in San Antonio will start playing football in 2009. They will be the 61st school since 2000 and the 83rd since 1993 to start a program. I can't believe how all these college administrators could allow this to happen, if it is such a stupid idea.

May I ask where you get your wonderful stats from to support saying a non-scholarship football program would bring in 70-100 kids a week? Not to mention, once you add football, what woman's sport would you be adding/spending money on? Or, what men's sport would you kill off? Take it easy, Champ. Why don't you stop talking for a while.

Actually, I am not sure we would need a fieldhouse, but a new weight room and locker room, both of which would cost less to build than a coffee house, would be needed.
Transplant, we're talking about non-scholarship football, so no other sports would need to be added or deleted to comply with Title IX requirements.

I think the suggestion to debate football again was an example of sarcasm. I don't think he really wanted you to do it.

You're probably right, it was sarcasm. However, if we're going to have posters who come on here and cite the gloom and doom of Bonas, without offering solutions on how to turn the University around, then it stands to reason that some other posters will add information on how many universities have made themselves more successful and attractive to potential students. Coffee houses and updated dorms are nice, but if you want to positively impact the number of admissions, and provide a situation that allows for continued growth in all aspects of Bonas, then adding a non-scholarship sport is the best, and most proven way to do just that.
By the way, just as we have had alumni open their wallets for baseball fields and basketball courts, there are also those that would gladly donate to a new locker room or field house.

I am not sure it takes a rocket scientist to figure out what I do for a living. I coach high school football, and have coached college football. The numbers I cite are accurate.

clubber is right on...check out the schools that field teams in the non scholarship pioneer football league..all very solid academically with 65-90 guys paying some form of tuition/room/board...duquesne has one of the more solid programs for smaller or mid major schools --RIT, st John Fish, Mercyhurst, Gannon, Univ of Roch...plenty of model programs within 2 hours of the brown indian's campus..would provide some much needed autumn entertainment also..it didnt work for canisius as they wanted to go in another direction..but there are many success stories out there...
