i don't have any problem with them reporting the bad news. just don't selectively accentuate the bad news of one institution/team and turn a blind eye to others. i have noticed that he seems to take a certain delight in our misfortune and never misses a chance to hammer us in his weekly column on Saturday in the Buffalo News. i never questioned his journalistic practices, just the zeal with which he approached certain aspects of his job.

when do you reach the point as a "journalist" (allegedly), (spoken like Jim Rome) that enough is enough. how many times do you kick them when they're down? it goes to my original point--somewhere along the line someone at Bona's must have really aggravated him and he is using his bully pulpit every chance he gets as payback. take it from someeone who has read him for quite some time now--he wasn't always like this.

Colin, I agree “If you don’t want bad news reported, don’t make any.” No one will dispute that. My issue with Harrington is his deliberate choice of words to depict Bona in the worst light. I am not challenging his credentials. I am challenging his objectivity in reporting. You point out that “Plagiarism IS academic fraud” as reported by Harrington. Neither you nor he is incorrect in saying that BUT plagiarism would be a far more accurate description of what our student athlete specifically did. As you know, it pertains specifically to using the words of another without crediting them. Academic fraud covers a far wider range of sins including claiming doctoral credentials one doesn’t possess, claiming credit for publications one didn’t write etc. Harrington knows the difference but selects the sexy & more damaging phrase even though it is not as accurate to this situation as plagiarism. I should be impressed that he is a grad of Mizzou. I wonder if that fine school of jounalism has 5 Pulitzer Prize writers, as does our beloved Bona.

I don't wanna beat this point much further, but I think it's untrue that Bonas is treated unfairly compared to other local schools. UB and Niagara are success stories, so the bulk of their coverage is going to be good, with the occasional exception like the recent drug arrest of the UB player. The bulk of Bona coverage is negative, but that's due to losing/scandal. As soon as that changes, you'll start seeing the same kind of "team on the rise" stories you've seen about Ub the last two years.
Canisius is actually a mixed bag -- I think they were hammered for the hockey scandal, but I also think that MacDonald gets a free pass from the media despite his lousy record.
