I think this team's ability or inability to shoot the 3 is being a little bit overemphasized. Schmidt seems to have built a team around two solid young post players and a bunch of forwards that can run the court and play a fast paced game. I think this team's success this season will hinge a lot more on its ability to make free throws and field goals inside of 15 feet than its ability to knock down the 3.

The 3-ptr is the great equalizer in college basketball. Teams like Dayton, Xavier and Temple are bigger, faster and more talented. Sometimes the only way you can beat those teams is being able to hit the 3. We saw that with some of VBK's teams, which featured a 6-6 spindly center with limited abilities offensively. It's a momentum booster or changer as well and the 3 can help you come back if you're down. You need at least a couple guys who can shoot it well. Plus, just think how much that would open things up for Andrew down low and for the slashers on the wing. Finding a solid two guard that can hit it at 35-40 pct should be a top priority in recruiting in my humble opinion. Then you become a complete team than can compete with the top 2 or 3 teams in the A-10.

GoPadres and adolph, I kind of fall somewhere in between you two. I feel like the three was a huge problem for us last year, but so was the fact that we didn't have anyone (with the exception of Hall when he was aggressive) that could score on penetration. We need a guy that can score of the dribble going to the hoop. That will open things up for easier 3 looks for guys like Matthews who may be a much better shooter when he is getting looks more in the flow of the game. It looks like we are heading in this direction with guys like Lew, ogo and even Davenport. Thanks for all of the first hand reports guys. Keep them coming.

GoPadres...Our lack of hitting treys with any consistency, as adophlottin points out, impacts on our ability to score inside 15’. Having a couple of trey scorers spreads the floor & prevents your defenders from collapsing & sealing the inside. Balanced scoring in & out would provide greater opportunities for The Professor, Jon & our forwards who can run the floor. I'm hoping that Chris will improve on his .329 conversion rate.

I think that we just need to wait and see on this 3 point shooting. What will be nice about this team is that we will have kickout opportunities due to the quality of our big men. When we were forced to have Malcolm and Jon Hall out there at the same time for almost the whole game last year, our kickouts would just be driven back into the hole again. Now with the additions of players such as Ogo and Lewis, we should have players that can convert on those looks from the outside. I agree with wgt to, Chris does need to improve on his conversion rate. Chris's 3 pt percentage might be one of the most important improvements needed this season.

While I appreciate the positive attitude and discussions about the evaluation of the talent from the "open workouts", I'm fearful that we all may be getting "ahead of ourselves". I too believe that the program has greatly upgraded the talent and that coach and his team have done a great job, we need to remember however, that these "workouts" are pretty much unstructured and the runs are against our own talent. We still have to play the "other guys"! I suspect that most of our opposition have upgraded their talent as well. I think a good year would be a couple of ticks above .500, anything beyond that would be gravy.

I believe that we will see an improvement on Matthews 3 point shooting. Sitting out that one year usually has an impact on players, and I believe it may have impacted him more than we think. Additionally playing around 35 minutes a game may have also hurt, and a more reasonable 25-30 minutes will help his shooting. He also played the point in the later part of the season, and that may have also had an impact (he did pretty well). Not trying to make excuses, just adding to the discussion.
I think we will see a more accurate Matthews this year.

I agree fjs, I think MATTHEWS pretty much had the "green" light last year, I think with a year under his belt and more talent on this year's team, he will be more selective with his shots.
