Former Siena head coach Rob Lanier will accept an assistant coaching position on new Virginia men’s basketball coach Dave Leitao’s staff, multiple sources said Tuesday.
An official release from UVa is expected today or Thursday.
Lanier, 36, spent the last four seasons at Siena where he compiled a 58-70 record. The school dismissed him in March after a 6-24 mark this past season.
Prior to his tenure at Siena, he was an assistant to Rick Barnes at Texas. While at Texas, Lanier earned a reputation as an excellent recruiter and was instrumental in Texas’ successful recruitment of All-American T.J. Ford, now with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks.
A 1990 St. Bonaventure graduate, Lanier has also had assistant stints at Rutgers, St. Bonaventure and Niagara.
Lanier would be the second hire made by Leitao. Gene Cross, an assistant under Leitao at DePaul the past three seasons, was the first addition to the staff. Cross was officially hired last week.
Leitao has a desire to add an assistant with Virginia ties to the staff. Former Virginia standout and current Boston University assistant coach Jason Williford interviewed with Leitao last Monday. A 1995 UVa graduate and Richmond native, Williford was a starter and instrumental contributor in Virginia’s run to the Elite Eight in 1995.
