This past Saturday, the Men's & Women's Basketball teams hosted their annual clinic for Special Olympics athletes from across Western, NY. The day was organized by Dr. Paula Scrabba's Clare College course students and supported by many other students. The SBU student K of C provided the lunches for the athletes & coaches and the Bona's students. Approximately 120 adult Special Olympics basketball players from as far away as Rochester and Warren, PA enjoyed the morning skills drills working on passing, ballhandling, shooting & defense with the SBU coaches. In the afternoon session the players divided themselves up and teamed with the athletes to compete in some unifeid games that everyone enjoyed greatly. Hats off to Coaches Doneth & Johnson, who spent the entire day with the athletes and to Coaches Schmidt, Massey & Curran who each found time to visit with the athletes. It was hard to tell who had more fun, the Special Olympics athletes or the Bonnies! One SO athlete remarked at the end of the day: "this was the best day, I can't wait to come back next year"! On Thursday, April 24th, the University will host a Special Olympics Unified Tournament on campus. Organized again totally by Bona's students, Unified Teams (comprised of students with and without disabilities) from local elementary and middle schools, will come to campus and compete in a full day tournament. Held for the first time last year, the reception for the program was so great, in the Allegany-Limesone school, more than 150 children wo sign up to participate this year.

sony….Thanks for providing a description of a remarkably rewarding event for participants and our Bona students & student athletes.
As you well know, in 1979 Bona hosted the New York State Special Olympics with Gov Hugh Carey the Honorary Chairman. At that time the Rev Mathias F. Doyle, O.F.M was president of Bona. NYS sent atthletes with special needs from 20 areas of the state. NYC was area #1 & sent 175 (from all 5 Boroughs) to the Enchanted Mountains. He welcomed the participants with these words. “St Bonaventure is proud of its reputation as a caring community. The University’s Franciscan tradition, close-knit residential environment, and strong interpersonal relationships foster this trait. It is in this same spirit of “caring,” or “loving,” that our community takes pride in hosting the Games this year.”
sony, your mission as President of the NYS Special Olympics provides an immense impact on all who participate in the countless activities you orchestrate. Your impetus to engage Bona & the University’s overwhelming response ensures that the welcoming message of Friar Doyle, 34 years ago, continues to reflect the Franciscan values that are instilled and practiced at Bona today. The Bona community with so many programs like “The Warming House”,” Bona Responds”, “Students for the Mountain”, “Bona Buddies” and support of Special Olympics make Bona such a special place.
