I am impressed too. One thing I disagree with him on is the second question about growing as a person. I can only speak for myself but in my time at Bonas, I grew a ton so I dont underestimate the growing that kids do in those years on any campus. I think leaving early stunts that growth. It sounds like he is a mature kid and knows what is best for him though. Its tough to turn down the NBA money.

It is absurd for him to claim (with a straight face) that the NBA offers him the better place to grow as a person. Please, what will he learn in the NBA, and from whom? The demands of the NBA and celebrity will overwhelm these other objectives, if they really are objectives. There is nothing exceptional in his letter, nor did I consider it worth the time taken to read it. He rationalizes leaving Duke, and he lightly glosses over his religious duty to go on mission at age 19. What would have been exceptional, and newsworthy? Had he simply said, "I am taking the millions", and in a rare demonstration of integrity, being candid about it. I wonder (and this is more wondering than another athlete's hypocritical statement deserves), who assisted with or edited the letter. It's a great PR start to his pro career.

Thanks, fjs64, for bringing this letter to my attention. I think that most of it comes from the heart of a 19-year old student athlete and points out the sincerity of a youth who feels he found the right coach and is making a grown-up decision. It's not an easy one, I'm sure, but considering the fact that he's "one serious injury and done" like all athletes, I don't think we can fault him for going this way. The fact that impresses me most, and I'm hoping he IS sincere about, is finishing his education at Duke so that he does have "Plan B" and secondarily, following through on his "mission"... Nice article...
