Now that we have a Toronto based coach on our staff - we should move to cultivate that relationship as much as possible. (I read a stats that there are only 5 Canadian fulltime NCAA coaches).
Here is a latest example
Today Hoops hype Canada is reporting that Jamall Murray an elite 6'5 PG wishes to stay closer to home.
If we are ever to 'steal' a top 4 star type prospect it will 99% be because the player wishes to play close to home and we happen to be the local option.
In order to further attract players from Toronto who have a desire to play near home we should push to play as many games as possible in the downtown Buffalo arena - one hour away from metro Toronto.
This is why we should push to play a team like Niagara in Buffalo on a neutral court on an annual basis.
We should consider annually pulling an A10 game out of Olean when the students are away and play in Buffalo.
Any BCS deals we could play on their court and return game in Buffalo.
The prize could be a player like Jamall Murray - we want to be the local option to these Toronto kids.
Unlike UB Canisius and Niagara we offer a 6 bid conference, a rich history of Canada players, recent NCAA appearances and a recent player who came thru us and into the NBA.
Thats a very strong sales pitch to any player and his parents!
Jamall Murray is a 2016 6'5 elite PG in Toronto who may one day play in the NBA
Hoops Hype Canada
2016 Jamal Murray w/desire to play close to home is from Kitchener, ON. 4.5 hours to both Wolverine & Spartan campus. 5 hrs to Syracuse.
St Bonaventure University is only 3 hours away - and our Buffalo games 1 hour away!
Maybe we dont steal a Jamall Murray from a Syracuse or Michigan - then give me those players who are just barely a cut below Michigan or Syracuse who wish to play close to home.
My main pitch to a kid like Murray - Andrew Nicholson does not get drafted into the NBA if he does not have 120+ college starts to refine his game. He never even attempted a 3pt shot until his junior year - where he was able to refine that skill in his last 60 games. You go to Syracuse and you get 40 starts - good look refining your game there and thats if they dont recruit over you.
If we can position ourselves as the viable local option to these kids - we could absolutely BOOM!
