Runs and Jake are 2 recent examples that height != production. That being said, it cant hurt to give him a shot.

another angle to look at -- is this what is known as a "committable offer" ? many big schools in both hoops and football throw out multiple offers to kids of all ages to get in front of them, etc...then as the process plays out, a schools live offer list changes...so if sbu fills up their allotment of scholarships for this year in the early signing period...those who hesitated are SOL. As signing date near, the schools tighten up their list of real offers...verbal offers don't mean squat [dirty little secret]...in the end, the school has to present the recruit with actual paperwork to sign. So, one could make the case that at this juncture in the cycle, sbu and others put out a bunch of offers..knowing full well that they can only take X # of kids in the cycle. This allows the schools to have options, as do the kids..then as their slots fill up, some offers dry up..does the big 7 footer develop sufficiently between now and whenever to make his offer committable? Kind of what the 40+ year olds on this board formerly did at the skellar or club 17 on a Friday or Saturday night...keep a few good ones on a string until the perceived "right one" comes along !

At this stage Andrew’s 7’ frame is already fairly well filled out at 245. Have not seen what injury kept him on the sidelines for most of his senior year at Wheaton North HS. In spite of that he was #5 center in the state & all conference jr & senior years & rated a 3 star by RIVALS. Was on the Honor Roll all 4 years in HS & had interest from Yale, Brown & Dartmouth. Safe to say he is a smart kid. At Stetson he appeared in one game, for less than a minute, & had 1 steal. So in the last two regular seasons he has been sitting on the sidelines. However this past summer he played very well in the All American JUCO Showcase Elite 80 in Vegas. So he must be physically sound. At 7’ he is reported to be mobile & has a good shot as this excert from first game of his senior year points out. Daily Herald....."Zelis scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half by hitting all six shots and four free throws. He had 12 in the third quarter with three straight baskets during the run to open a 41-34 lead." 4-4 FTS is a miniscule sample but when a 7' mkaes 4 in a row I take notice. basketball.dailyherald.com/article/20121127/sports/711279614/ kyprephoops.com/1213/2013JanILBoys.html

Some of the postings on this thread baffle me. Why bring up Barry, for instance?

Sbu79 -I agree, this staff has earned more slack then they get here. Runs notwithstanding, they have many more hits then misses. they must see him as a game contributor to put the offer out there.

I brought up Barry because being seven foot is not always the end all be all in a recruit. Obviously the staff must see other things in him other than his height, and I would certainly hope so. But the human factor is when we see seven foot everyone and myself included tends to get prematurely excited. I dampen my own excitement with a memory of the arrival of Barry on campus in 77' spring as a recruit and we all thought he was going to bring Bona's to the NCAA's. Not so, not even close to so. I also was very excited when I saw the size of Runs when he was signed. Maybe this is my own issue to deal with, but I would be surprised if others don't take the same hook.

Not sure via NCAA rules if this is allowed, but do programs have their graduates from years past playing in the NBA as reference connecting recruits with past players to show possibly what they could amount too and answer questions from what it was like when they were at ABC college / University?
I have a feeling that breaks some NCAA rules, but curious.

I erred in pointing to your post specifically. It seem, though, that after your post, there were additional posts that, to me, seemed overly negative about a kid nobody has ever even heard of previously. As was said in Lite beer ads at one time: "I feel strongly both ways." It's foolish to believe just because of a height number, we have a savior, but also, we need to not tar some kid because of the misses of the past.

Ditto... My post wasn't meant to belittle this recruit or the staff in any way. Like Res, I just don't see the big deal about 7'. I'll take a 6'9" Nicholson over most seven footers any day of the year.

Question - how was this kid all conference his senior year, "when he missed most of his senior year with an injury"?
