well, another season is upon us and i, once again, will be looking to see how many minutes of quality play we can accrue each game with an eye towards how the quality of our play will serve us in a-10 play, esp vs the top teams in the league, such as vcu...on offense, will our ball-handlers protect the ball(read: minimal amount of turnovers) and find the open teammate for a high percentage shot?...how well will we shoot the 3 and, maybe just as importantly, how open will we be when we take the 3?...will our bigs box out consistently, get the defensive rebound, and accumulate points on put-backs on the offensive end?...will our bigs hit the mid-range jumper which will in turn open up things inside?...and on defense, will we be quick?...will we cut off the baseline on the drive and provide weak-side help when needed?...will we draw charges and force the bigs on the other team to foul by going over the back because we've done a good job of boxing them out?...
once again, i won't make predictions about wins and losses...i will say if there is an affirmative answer to all of the above questions, i think we'd all be very happy with the won-loss record at the end of the season...

Always highly partisan and biased, I give the Bonnies an A minus. That will seem high to many, considering their #100 ranking. However, I think the rank reflects a pretty weak OOC schedule, absence of key players, and the task of blending in many new players. I certainly hope there are no unpleasant surprises in the remainder of the OOC. Based on what we've seen so far, I daresay this team will win 2/3 of its A10 schedule. Yes, that works out to 12-6, so call me crazy if you want. It's been said before. P.S. Well, if I am crazy I guess I have company--and not just within Bona Nation. not even 20 minutes...combined...both our teams...i thought the comments of our coaches in today's oth were very interesting: coach crowley intimated he has been concerned about his team's quality of play for quite a while, even when the team was 10-3...i give him a lot of credit...he knows the team has underperformed and he's upfront about it...he takes responsibility and as head coach he should, but it's not all on him...he's got assistants who have to do their jobs and players who have to do their jobs, too...what i like about coach crowley is that he doesn't always simply rely on the obvious answer or "coachspeak"...he provides some insight with his answers, and to do so especially after a disappointing performance is commendable...
on the other hand, i'd like to see coach schmidt give us more insight with his answers...or maybe it's i just don't agree with some of the things he says, such as "a win is a win"...what are you saying?...that all wins are the same?...i don't think coach believes that for a second...maybe i'm lacking political correctness, but there are games that we won this season where i would've said "yeah, we won but we stunk,..we didn't do this, this, this, this and this well at all...we played about 10 minutes of good basketball all night..."
i guess the point is this: don't just settle for the win...set the bar higher...aim for 30+ minutes of quality play a game, and have the players expect that coach isn't gonna be too pleased (even if we win) if the quality of play is lacking...

The St. Joe's game was just ugly. We won, but I did not feel warm and fuzzy at the end of that game.

Why can't we defend the 3?

Because they can't stay in front of anyone (except Davidson) and therefore defense is always coming to help stop the ball which leaves shooters open...
