LaDarien Griffin, a 6-foot-7 forward from Jacksonville, Fla., and Derrick Woods, a 6-foot-8 forward from Yardley, Pa., have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at St. Bonaventure University and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2015, Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt announced.
Griffin is a senior at Providence High School where he plays for coach Jim Martin. Last season, Griffin helped Providence reach the Florida 3A state semifinals, where he scored 18 points in a loss to Sagemont. He averaged 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game as Providence finished 29-4. One of Griffin's teammates was current Duke freshman Grayson Allen.
Griffin also plays AAU basketball for Nike Team Florida. FloridaHoops.com rated Griffin 50th in its top 100 players in the state as well as a 4-star recruit, while Max Preps rated Griffin No. 6 in the state at his position.
"LaDarien is a long, athletic combo forward who can excel in our up-tempo style," Schmidt said. "He's the type of player who loves to be in the gym, constantly looking to improve. He has a really bright future, and we're really happy he's a part of our program."
Woods is a senior at Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pa., where he plays for coach Bill Coleman. Last year, Woods helped Pennsbury to a 23-6 record and a berth in the District 1 final. Pennsbury aslo made it to the second round of the state playoffs. Woods averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game. He shot 56 percent from field. Woods is also a member of the AAU team Team Final (Pa.).
"Derrick is a similar player to LaDarien – long, athletic, fast," said Schmidt. "He's more of a 4-man, though, and he's a lefty who can score in the paint or on the perimeter. We're really looking forward to working with Derrick to maximize his abilities as a person and as a player."
St. Bonaventure has four scholarship seniors this season – guard Andell Cumberbatch, forward Chris Dees, guard Jordan Gathers and center Youssou Ndoye.
