Not trying to be negative here but there is a pattern that has developed. In last few years we were gifted Andrew Nicholson due to a late season injury that kept him out of sight and the fortuitous building of a new science building on campus.Bonnies special alumni Peter Van Paassen virtually gift wrapped Charlon Kloof as a 3 years starting point guard, and Mathew Wright becomes eligible and qualified at the eleventh hour.Better to be lucky than good! Going into this signing period, we have only one solid signature as Derrick Woods has not yet qualified. Having seen two of the visitors last week on tape, it is being reported that team associates deemed them poor choices and probably unable to contribute at the A-10 level. Then why were they here on campus? My take with this staff that has bothered me for some time is about our staffs inability to develop strong relationships with local AAU programs. Like it or not, this is the key to the Hurley's success, and even the GW head coach has an acknowledged better relationship with the Albany City Rockets from Washington DC as opposed to us with the Albany program being in our back yard. The second issue is their ability to track and close. They are really good at identifying under the radar talent, but closing is a totally different picture. This pattern is not one that will take and keep the program in the upper third or for that matter upper half of a very good basketball conference. I don't know the answer, but it is clearly troubling to me having just witnessed the exit of four/five players who could not play at this level. That attrition seriously impacts class balance on your roster, and probably forces late adds which typically put us in JUCO programs to fill out our roster. My point is emphasized that we were among several programs in the hunt for Shakir Brown. Many thought we might be near the top for his services. Thus far he has taken multiple visits, and we are not mentioned recently. Not panicking yet, but these next two weeks are critical and we don't need to be the perennial bridesmaid. 100% agree! Shocking!

Going into this signing period, we have only one solid signature as Derrick Woods has not yet qualified. Is this already well known? I'm surprised nobody has commented on this yet. Reading it caused a sinking feeling in my gut.

Heard rumor we have a big guy coming. Just because we don't tip our hand doesn't mean we're asleep.

I love the analogies that are posted - We get a good player and it's just luck. We get a bad player and it's because we suck as recruiters. Look, if you want to blame the good players on luck, then blame the the ones that don't pan out on bad luck! It matters not how or when we get a player, just that the team is competitive in this very good league, which we are and have been for a few years now. I read the same complaints every year yet there seems to be no correlation between when we get our players and how good the team is. We will have a team to put on the floor next year and we will be competitive in the league. If you're the worrying type, I'm sure none of this will be reassuring, so back to chewing your fingernails.

Isnt that the point of a visit, to get a better look at a recruit playing with and against A10 level players? If the visits were unofficial then OK bring 'em in. If they were official visits normally they would have been scouted multiple times, in person and on film prior to being asked to visit. Usually don't want to waste official visits on someone who hasn't already made a positive impression. Officials are for trying to close the deal.

Not overly concerned at this point however I'm looking for some good news. We basically have the 3 and 5 spot open for kids who want a legitimate chance to start immediately. I would hopethat is appealing to someone..,

Bottom line is that yes, this staff, as with just about any anywhere, misses on a few kids, but each year gets enough quality to put 8-9 on the floor each game to compete in the league. But concerned? Of course, but history tells me not to sweat it too much as we always speculate here on "target" based on rumors, that turn out to be wrong. Then suddenly we have several signed, and my sweat was wasted. patience and keep in mind we already have two good ones signed.
