Since this thread started with North Dakota, it's the place to note that they announced they are dropping baseball and men's golf.

The last I knew, the baseball team was still not fully funded. I believe they are not able to offer as many full scholarships as most other A10 teams. If it is still the case, I think we should fully fund the baseball team before adding a Men's lacrosse team. as far as i know too, jc, the baseball team is not fully funded...maybe this is an issue that this board should discuss...how can we be more involved in funding our teams?...i'm of the opinion that we should begin by funding those teams that we have in the a-10...any help we can provide those teams would free up funds to put to use for items that are at the forefront of the university's needs, such as monies that could be used to increase our efforts to spike the enrollment...

in all our discussions of adding this sport or that sport (or wherever that tangent may take us), i think we have to keep in mind that the particular sport, per se, is not the issue...the issue is how do we grow the enrollment and what part does adding/contributing to a particular sport(s) play in making that possible...

The last I knew, the baseball team was still not fully funded. I believe they are not able to offer as many full scholarships as most other A10 teams. I believe none of our non revenue sports are fully funded. For example, I know a couple of years ago this was the status of Bonas Softball - 3.5 scholarships. NCAA allowance - 12. Only three teams in the league funded all 12 (and since then, NCC has left the league). One of the teams in UMass. "Shockingly" they have won the league title almost every year. In comparison, Niagara and Canisius fund 8 or 9 scholarships for softball. Just not enough $ to go around. I strongly think that upgrading our Club Lacrosse's presence would be a boost to getting some more students. Rugby has done a great job in this area. I did not know that we even had a Lax team, and for a # of years I followed WNY Lax pretty closely. Club is an excellent way to go. The level of play can be pretty high - yet the demands on the student is a lot less than even a D3 sport. For example, my son was a good HS Lax player. He went to a very large State university, and went to try out for the Club team. Stopped after one day - he said the play level was unbelievable, with guys who had D1,2 and 3 offers, but did not want to invest the time the other college teams would demand. So I think if SBU pushed their Club Lax program to HS players in WNY, Long Island, NJ - the school would probably pick up a few kids every year who would not even have thought of Bonas if it did not have some type of Lax team. Same with other sports that have a lot of participants. Give kids an outlet that they did not know existed.

I could have swore I read somewhere that our men's swim team gives our the most scholarships for any A10 swim team. I could be wrong though.

The Men's Swim team is a consistent top performer in the league. I actually interviewed someone the other day who is graduating from Butler this year. They recalled their freshman year swimming against Bonas and told me "They were so fast, we just couldn't keep up" Nice to hear.

I am surprised they played baseball. Outside of Roger Maris, has there ever been another pro baseball player from that frozen tundra?

in this week's bv, someone appears to agree with you, dadster...there is an article titled "all night dining option explored"...the writer asked a few students what they thought of the idea...one student (a frosh) said he thought the money could be better spent on more funding for clubs on campus...all these many years later, i still enjoy reading the bv...i like to read what the students (and faculty) are thinking...

According to the archives, Bona hockey was NCAA Division III from 1982 to 1993. "The final years of the program the team went on to post records of 2-25-2(1991), 5-20(1992), and 4-21(1993). After the 1993 season the varsity program was disbanded." -- web.sbu.edu/friedsam/archives/athletics/Hockey/hockey.htmYou've got to love the crests on those sweaters, though... Ok. That helps my memory some. Greg Wood, better known as "Woody" was a dynamic hockey player, maybe the best to ever play for St. Bonaventure, but the club team used to have to travel everyday as a club team to Jamestown to use a rink until Olean built the rink downtown. Then, we were able to go Division III and had a fairly good season as "Woody" led the team that 1981-82 season to a .500 or better record. The first home game at the rink was memorable as "Woody" scored at least two goals including the game winner. The team was fun to watch but it is disappointing that it never got more off the ground in upcoming years. I guess when we put so much in basketball and you have a sport like hockey that can be so expensive, it has a tendency to take a "back seat" to other sports....

Darin Erstad, former all star outfielder with the Angels, was born in raised in ND, although he played his college ball at Nebraska where he is now the coach

Based on our population so far (2 ballplayers), North Dakota produces very good fine ball players. Roger Maris is one of the few players ever to win two MVP awards, and one of maybe two players who won two MVPs and are not in the HOF (Dale Murphy I think is the other).

Now the quarterback at North Dakota State has been chosen #2 in the NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He faces long odds to make the team. If he gets to play, he'll learn the Eagle fans are unforgiving

If he gets to play, he'll learn the Eagle fans are unforgiving he faces long odds to make the team? Are you serious? The Eagles traded up to draft him so I highly doubt they would do that for someone they didnt see being their QB of the future.
