Halcovage is in year #1 of a five year deal. He has strong pedigree and seemed to be a great hire. First year of 5, stepping into a job with a bare cupboard. No way would think of dropping this game. If we ain’t dropping Niagara or that place on Main St, we certainly aren’t dropping SUNY-A.

There are 362 D-1 schools playing basketball. Long time "Rivals" Siena is 4-20 with a NET of 356. UB is 2-21 with a NET of 347. Canisius is 8-14 with a NET of 254. Niagara is 11-11 with a NET of 244. Why would we ever consider playing any of these teams on the road again? Never never please.

Bonaventure could EASILY be in the position UB is in when Schmidt retires. I don't take any pride in them being down. It does us no good.
UB has mostly been a Q2 road game since we've started this series. Not so much for the Canisius and Niagara programs.

WE were occasionally good with baron coaching, but before that SBU struggled. Then they struggled when baron left. It's not easy getting talent to come to the middle of nowhere. Schmidt's success has helped bring talent in over his career. One bad hire and SBU could be at the bottom of the A-10 for quite some time. So what Cmoses said was not stupid. By the way, you shouldn't call people stupid-especially when they are more knowledgeable than you about the particular topic.

My post wasn’t meant to be critical of Mark Schmidt. I simply think a program that has been at the top of the A10 for a decade+ is more likely to win an A10 title again than finish 3-21 as that poster, stupidly said we could EASILY be. You wanna be all woe is me, we suck without schmidt, fine, but again 3-21 as SUNY Amherst is, is HISTORICALLY terrible

There is no way that this program would fall that far… you’re overestimating just how much Schmidt means to the program right now… notice that I say “now” as opposed to 10-15 years ago.
A phenomenal recruiter, yes… a great coach, not as much… and with how much the salary of this job has increased over the last decade, we could find someone else who won’t let the program fall into obscurity.

We are in yet another Golden Era of Bona BB ! Appreciate it and cherish it, for it will not last forever.
Mark Schmidt has been an amazing positive force!
As the NCAA slowly dissolves into chaos, we should be thankful for Mark's leadership in these very troubled times for mid major programs.
Soon there will be two tiers of D1, one paying huge salaries to athletes, and the other completely unable to match those salaries. So appreciate our program in the moment.
With age comes perspective.....being a Bona fan since 1965 I can tell you we have experienced many peaks and valleys over that period, we are definitely at the near peak level now considering the real time pressures on mid major programs.
Enjoy the homecoming weekend.........stay safe and have some fun at the Burton........

We could EASILY win more A10 titles as well, but yeah… How is it stupid? Teams in much better positions than us have made bad coaching hires that have set them back years. Who's to say the next AD doesn't opt for a cheap hire like UB's HC and the wheels fall off. If hiring head coaches was easy, you'd never see teams bottom out the way the do after a successful coach hits the road. Jim Baron is the second best coach SBU has had in the past 40 years and he won 39% of his games in A10 play. It's a hard business. There are a lot of really solid A10 programs that should be better. SBU can sustain success if they want to pay their next coach north of $1M. They could also opt for some random career assistant and end up with Ron DeCarli or Tom Chapman. My statement isn't a knock on SBU necessarily, but how you need multiple parties on board and willing to spend money to get the right HC in place.
