I read somewhere that, in addition to the new Bob Lanier Court, the baskets will be hung from the roof again. When the roof hung basket supports were taken down about the year 2001, there was great joy that Bonas was joining the modern world, that all great programs had the court-side basket supports. The official reason for going to court-side supports was to allow those fans in the end zone seats to see an unobstructed view of the center scoreboard. My question is: if Bonas goes back to the roof hung basket supports, are we going backward in time? Or is there now a trend to go to roof hung basket supports if the physical plant will allow for such?

Since the endzone seats don't extend very high, it impacted the view of a very small percentage of fans, so I find it hard to believe there was great joy when they used the padded floor supports.
If you were sitting in the endzone, would you rather have an unobstructed view of the center scoreboard or the game?

The real reason we are going to hanging baskets is because the RC is so heavily used that continuously moving the baskets, which is a very manual process is damaging the court and takes time (people hours). They turn that arena over several time a week during the basketball season and having hanging baskets will simply make it faster and cheaper for the University in the long run. It has nothing to do with sight lines. And now you know.

Rusty, it sounds like you might be on the 'inside' - would you happen to know what they plan on doing with the 3 sets of hydraulic floor baskets we have ? Might they use them in Richter, or maybe sell them (E-Bay ?) to try and recoup some money.
They were something like $25,000 a set weren't they ? And one set was never used. Seems like there would be a market for them somewhere at the bargain price of maybe $15,000 per set. Maybe more if you happen to get a couple of serious bidders going head to head.
That's at least $45,000 extra in the hoops kitty, nothing to sneeze at. Better to do this than have them sitting in a closet collecting dust.

What difference does it make if we have hanging baskets or not as long as the guys can put the ball through the basket that's all that matters. Some of you guys worry about the darndest things.

Side Note: Hanging baskets good or bad can be a huge advantage to the home team due to the fact that most visiting players would not be used to that style. Just having to view the rim without seeing anything behind it can directly affect ones depth perception. It is definately a little thing that can help the team get a few extra possessions each game, in my opinion obviously.

I just remembered that two old courts were removed, the original from the University Center days, and one from the RC. One was under the other. Do we know what the new court's thickness will be, so that when the baskets are relowered on the existing frames, the rims will be exactly 10 feet high? As I remember, the height of the hanging baskets was not adjustable. Bonas should keep the old portable baskets until they are sure the hanging baskets will be able to meet specifications. For those readers who may think this is a trivial matter, let me remind them that NASA sent a spacecraft programmed to land on Mars using Metric System units. However, NASA fed in data to the program using English System numbers. The spacecraft crashed on Mars costing us all hundreds of thousands of dollars. Let's hope Bonas does a better job than NASA did.

I'm sure they will call in Hickory Coach Norman Dale to measure the height of the rims, to ensure that they are in compliance with NCAA guidelines.

Maplehearst, the height of the hanging baskets won't be adjustable once the baskets are mounted in place in the pole from the ceiling. In case you don't remember, Bona's has an exceptional welding program, so if the mounting brackets need to be adjusted by a fraction of an inch they have the capability to do so. What's next, you and Bleacherbum are going to start an investigation into the size of wieners being served? Keep em coming Maplehearst, you certairly are a true representative of your community.
