the following is from the NY Daily News "Hoops" blog.... the reason I found it interesting was that SBU was considered one of his choices very early in his recruiting, before his status started to climb.....but is this an example of a player getting "recruited over" although he appeared to be a outstanding prospect/player for St John's based on his playing time and stats?
Johnnies lose another as Calhoun will transfer
This one have been simmering on the rumor mill down at the shore for a while, but St. John's forward Qa'rraan Calhoun, the former Raritan High star who averaged 5.9 ppg and 4 rpg and played in all 31 games for the Red Storm (10 ppg, 5.5 rpg in the final 10 games, 22 against Providence in the final game of the regular season) has officially decided to transfer today (possibly to Monmouth, according to some). Wouldn't that be a bombshell.
There are two ways to look at this: 1) It opens up another scholarship for the Storm in a year where there are a number of quality recruits still open or 2) It points out how unstable the program has become.
This is Norm Roberts' fourth year and he's already lost seven players he recruited - if you include guard Derwin Kitchen, who never made it through the clearinghouse. Let's see: Cedric Jackson, Dexter Gray, Ricky Torres, Avery Patterson, Calhoun and Kitchen.
We really liked Calhoun's athleticism and upside potential last year. Roberts and staff have only one senior Eugene Lawrence and eight first year players on the roster. It's tough enough to win in the Big East without experience and most Johnnies' fans expect some kind of Big East tournament run and postseason appearance.
