Aug. 25, 2007
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure men's basketball head coach Mark Schmidt announced that Maurice Thomas has transferred from the University of Texas at El Paso and will attend St. Bonaventure this fall.
A 6-foot-8, 210-lb. forward, Thomas will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after he sits out the 2007-08 season per NCAA transfer guidelines.
"We are really excited to have a kid of Maurice's caliber join our program," said Schmidt. "He fits our up-tempo style of play and has already shown that he has what it takes to be successful at this level. He will have a year to further learn our system and will be a real asset as a mentor for the younger guys."
Thomas emerged as UTEP's third leading scorer and most reliable inside player as a sophomore this past season. He earned 20 starts over 30 games played, playing an average 20.8 minutes per contest. Thomas averaged 9.4 points per game while shooting a Conference USA third-best 54 percent (93-171) from the field. He finished with double-figure points in 16 games, including 15 times over the team's final 22 contests. Thomas also ranked third on the club with 5.4 boards per contest and led the Miners in rebounding on five occasions. Thomas' dominance in the paint was displayed by his 27 blocks, three double-digit rebound efforts and a pair of double-doubles.
Over his two seasons at UTEP, Thomas averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds over 61 games. Thomas played in all of the team's 31 games as a freshman.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Thomas played along side current teammate Chris Matthews in 2004-05 at Lutheran Christian Academy. There, the duo led Lutheran Christian Academy to a 35-3 record and the No. 5 prep school ranking in the nation. Deemed the 22nd-best fifth year player in the country by Hoop Scoop and a top-150 prospect by Rivals.com, Thomas averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds in 2004-05.
Prior to his stay at Lutheran Christian Academy, Thomas played at Olney High School in the city of "Brotherly Love". As a senior, he averaged 12.6 points and eight boards a game while being named honorable mention All-Public League by the Philadelphia Daily News.
