My starting lineup as of today
Starting lineups haven't meant much the last few years, and I'm not sure how much they'll matter this year. With a new coach and plenty of new faces for the Bonnies, expect a lot of experimenting. Everybody on the roster should get a chance to show what they have.
But for the sake of argument, here is my starting five as of today:
To me, there are two no-brainers .... Michael Lee at power forward and Malcolm Eleby at point guard.
Lee is a proven A-10 player who has long harbored the potential to be an all-conference performer. There is a hope that coach Mark Schmidt's hard outer core will be good for Lee's soft exterior.
In a way Eleby is the default starter. The freshman is the only point guard on the roster.
You're not going to want Tyler Relph (he who never penetrates the 3-point line) running your offense for long stretches, even though he'll probably have to.
Eleby, who can also play off guard, comes with high praises anyway. Let him crash and burn and get back up. That will only help mold him into the all-conference player he's projected to be.
At shooting guard, I like Relph. He's a strong leader and he's basketball savvy. Plus he'll likely give you 10 points a night with his outside shooting.
This is where it gets tricky.
The prevailing thought is that Zarryon Fereti would start at the swing spot, making for a three-guard attack. Personally, I like Z coming off the bench. He's an exciting player, a spark plug, and he did well when playing that role last year.
What's more, Fereti, with his athleticism, can spell Relph, as well as the starting swing man.
As for the starter there, how about Hilary Haley. Though just a freshman, Hilary is said to be ultra athletic -- not athletic as A.J. Hawkins but a better shooter.
If Haley falters, this is where the Bonnies are deepest. Tyler Benson and newcomer Delonte Taylor (also an athletic scorer) can play on the wing. Da'Quan Cook, a versatile power forward, might get time here too, if Schmidt wants to play big.
As for who will join Lee in frontcourt, it's anybody's guess. It will likely be a three-horse race among Cook, junior college transfer D'Lancy Carter and freshman Matt Morgan, who is considered a bit of a project.
I'll go with Carter for now, but with Cook right on his heels. Carter is seasoned and drew interest from better A-10 programs. He's only 6-7, but is built like an offensive tackle.
In summary
PG Eleby
SG Relph
SF Haley
PF Lee
PF Carter
Personally, I think we'll see Eleby, Relph, Fereti, Lee, and Cook start, but I can see Vinny's scenario shaking out, too.
