ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Following a successful trip to Albuquerque, N.M., the St. Bonaventure men's basketball received some more good news on Tuesday as head coach Mark Schmidt announced the signing of Canadian forward Andrew Nicholson to a National Letter of Intent.
The 6-foot-9, 230-lb. Nicholson is in his final year at Father Michael Goetz Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario.
"I'm extremely excited about Andrew joining our family," said head coach Mark Schmidt. "We needed somebody of his caliber and size who can run the floor and block shots. We are also excited to get our recruiting connections back into Canada. In the past, Canadian players have played a large role in the program's success and it was an avenue we needed to get back into. Andrew is a great get for our first recruiting class."
This past weekend in Hamilton, Ontario, Nicholson opened his final season by leading the Gators to a 5-1 mark and a berth in the championship game of the Pinky Lewis Tournament. Nicholson scored 19 points in each of the final two games of the tournament, adding 12 rebounds and four blocks in the championship game. For his efforts, he was named to the All-Tournament team. Father Goetz is currently ranked fifth in the hooptowngta.com Senior Boy's Super 16.
In 2006-07, Nicholson led Father Goetz to a 38-4 mark, a Peel Region senior championship and a spot in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Quad-A playoffs. Under the direction of head coach Ray Kulig, Nicholson averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two steals per game en route to being named to the Toronto Star Fab Five. Nicholson also earned All-Star status at three tournaments, including the Most Valuable Player award at the Pearson Invitational. There, he poured in 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Gators to a win in the championship game against host Pearson.
Nicholson joins Marquise Simmons on the early signing list for the Bonnies. Washington State transfer Chris Matthews and UTEP transfer Maurice Thomas will also be eligible to play next season as juniors. Both are currently enrolled at St. Bonaventure and are practicing. The Bonnies will lose seniors Zarryon Fereti, Michael Lee and Tyler Relph to graduation this season.
