Just reading in USA Today as well as SI.com that NJ is the new hs bball hotbed. 3 of the top 5 teams in the nation all reside in NJ. as an NJ alum I need to hit the recruiting trail. NJ has always had great players coming out of it and I wonder why we never really recruited here. Its closer to Bonas than DC and we get alot of players from that area. I just think its a spot that Schmidt might want to look into.
Let's Go Bonas!!!

Cook was a good start and you will see more players from Jersey, Philly, and D.C. for years to come because of Dino's connections to those areas...as Schmidt said he usually recruits from areas that we play in.
I also would like to see kids who go under the radar from Canada and Western NY...hopefully Nicholson can be one of them..

BE CAREFUL - njbona02
Watch the games but make sure you don't talk to the players about SBU. Doing so is an NCAA violation.

I am not looking to be an illegal recruiter for Bonas. Although I do have a connection at Bergen Catholic but thats not one of the big ones.

Two players that I can think of right off hand from NJ are Rashaan Palmer & David Messiah Capers they were both pretty goo players. I am sure there are more I'll have to check.

Not your typical connection, but Adrian Wojnarowski, '91, wrote a book on St. Anthony's (one of those top-5 teams you're talking about) a few years ago so I'm sure the current players are aware of Bona's.

Robert Cheeks was also from NJ (St. Anthonys) if I'm not mistaken

BO2- I just read NCAA Rules regarding Recruiting & you are mostly correct. There are a couple of things I read that are confusing to me though. Section 13.02.11.e says your are considered to be a "representative" of the athletic department if you "have been involved in OTHERWISE PROMOTING (my emphasis) the institution's athletic program. Not sure what that means, but that's what I was alluding to in my comment about not talking to potential recruit & talking up SBU. Also, you mentioned contributing to basketball program. My understanding, from reading information from other programs sent to their "boosters", is you are considered a "representative if you have contributed to ANY sport. One is also considered a "representative" if you EVER had season tickets. Also, ity seems like you are never able to loose the "representative" tag unless you formally apply to have the label removed. Thanks for your heads-up. Sure would like to know particulars from Steve Watson.

Well its a good thing I have never had season tickets nor do I give money to any sport. Looks like I will head over to Jersey City or Newark or Elizabeth and wear a tshirt in the crowd. Maybe give a shout out to some peeps.

Maybe give a shout out to some peeps. If you do that, there is a chance you could end up having Bona banned from recruiting a player or two. The NCAA "booster" definition is broader than indicated above. If you have done anyof the following, you generaly can't have any contact with recruits or their relatives: "(a) Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program; (b) Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution; (c) Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes; (d) Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or (e) Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program. The tough one is the last one. The NCAA in the past has sometimes used a very broad interpretation as to "promoting the school's athletics program". Anyone who goes around talking up the program, even on a message board, could fit into this category. Many alums - perhaps most alums - could fit into this category. Because of the NCAA's broad interpretation, many schools on their website have included ALL alums in their definition of a "representative" of the school. For example, see the UConn definiition: www.uconnhuskies.com/MainLinks/NCAACompliance/compliancerep.htmlOr the St. Joes definition: sjuhawks.cstv.com/compliance/stjs-compliance.html
