From the Philly Daily News
Lewis Leonard's buddies figured they had him pegged.
They wound up as surprised as the defenders who just know they can keep him from scoring.
"Once the word got out about some of the bigger schools that were coming after me, everybody figured I'd go with one of them," Leonard said. "That didn't matter to me. I want to be where I know I'll be comfortable. I'm going where my heart led me."
Leonard, a 6-4 wing guard, talked yesterday by cell phone on his way back to Philly from Olean, N.Y.
The former Frankford High star, who just completed a star-studded career at San Bernardino Valley College, in California, has committed to St. Bonaventure.
And, yes, that means he'll be going from a quite-hot climate to mostly brrrrrrrrr.
"Don't forget. I'm from Philly. That's a minor adjustment," he said, laughing. "The weather doesn't really concern me."
Leonard, the Foothill Conference MVP, this season finished second among California's junior-college scorers with a 25.2 average.
"Well, really, I was No. 1," he said. "Our SID didn't put in the results from three of our games. I know I was No. 1 and so do my coaches, so it's cool."
Leonard was hearing from Alabama, New Orleans, UC-Santa Barbara and Robert Morris (he also made a visit there), and during his visit to St. Bonaventure, he fielded phone calls offering scholarships to San Diego State and Fresno State.
Among the attractions of the Bonnies: On the roster are freshman guard Malcolm Eleby (Franklin Learning Center) and forward Maurice "Grease" Thomas, who spent part of his school career at Olney and sat out this season after transferring from UTEP.
"That's a big thing. Being able to be with Philly guys," said Leonard, who intends to major in business management. "We're gonna have fun together.
"When I told people I'd be visiting St. Bonaventure, they said there'd be no way I'd go there. They kept talking about how it's in the middle of nowhere. It's OK. I don't mind . I need that to concentrate on my books and basketball. It's nice enough up here.
"St. Bonaventure needs a scorer. Hey, everybody knows I can do that. I'll be able to go right in and make an impact."
