I have posted some brief thoughts on the Bonnies last remaining scholarship and what they should do with it. Please read, if you have a few minutes, and feel free to chime in with some comments as to whether or not you agree or disagree with my assessment. Enjoy and lets hope the Bonnies wake up tonight against the Spiders. thebonablog.wordpress.com/

Is 33 Simmons, Marquis G/F FR 6-8/210 Washington, D.C./Central
the forgotten man?
the missing link?
Copenhagen - Class of ‘79 (one of the golden ages of Bona basketball”!)

He actually spells his name M-a-r-q-u-i-s-e even though our own web site has had it wrong all season. Simmons will be a very good player at SBU. He can play the 2, 3, and 4 and is every bit of 6'8". Among his strengths are a soft touch from about 18 feet and in, great vision, a solid handle for a man his size, and very strong passing skills. If I remember correctly, his high school coach said he'll need to get much stronger to play major minutes in the A-10 as well as increase his level of intensity. Keep in mind, Simmons won the 3-point shootout at the Jordan Capital Classic last year. His most notable offers, to my knowledge, were SBU and George Mason. We were very fortunate to get him early last fall. This kid is no slouch.
As for our last scholarship, it HAS to be a point guard. There simply isn't any other option. Thankfully, I've heard from multiple people that our staff is actively pursuing a point man for the spring signing period. Lord knows we need him.

I thought Simmons was as tall as Nicholson when they were standing next to each other. I would think just by adding him and Leonard next year's team already improves dramatically. I agree 100% on the need for a PG, you can never have enough guards in a league that always seems to be full of talented guards.

I agree with BO2....This team should be much improved next year. Simmons should be able to give us some depth on the wing along with an improved Davenport and then Leonard as well. Still think we need a ligit, A10 point guard...anyone like Jio Fontan would be great for this team. It would also be nice to have a more consistent shooter than Matthews, and someone who could actually create his own shot and get to the foul line a bit....

We basically need a combo guard think Eleby but quicker and can shoot a 3 consistently.

Everyone should check out Ian's article. Absolutely agree with him about the following, which is copied from his article:
"Schmidt clearly decided to give Ray a scholarship because he believed he could come in and help run an uptempo, run and gun style of play that Schmidt wants to run. I believe that Schmidt is looking for a better version of Ray Blackburn to run his team. In working with him last year, I can say that Schmidt would love to bring in a jet quick point man who can take care of the ball, and get to the rim whenever needed."
Tom is correct about Marquise Simmons being every bit of 6'8." Marquise was standing next to Houseknecht and Thomas and actually looked slightly taller. With this teams struggles with perimeter shooting, have to believe Marquise would have made a significant difference.

Between Carson, and Diggs, and now Eleby, we haven't had a point who can shoot the ball. Relph obviously could, but he wasn't a true PG. It is hard to watch games and see Eleby being left wide open, with defenses just begging him to shoot the tree ball, him obliging, only to miss. He either has to learn to play within himself and never take those open threes, or work his tail off to get a jump shot, because a PG who can shoot the ball opens up the floor for everyone else.

We need a lesser version of a guy like Johnny Flynn. A guy who is not afraid to pull up and hit a 3 ,attack the rim, protect the ball, and run the offense at a very high speed.

Would be thrilled with the full version. In a high school game saw him sky and slam a rebound back into the basket. Believe he was only 5'10" at the time. Johnny Flynn is an incredible athlete.
