Hopefully, someone can help settle an argument. During the 71-72 season Bona traveled down to the Carolina Coliseum to play the Game******s. My wife and I and a few of our friends drove down to Columbia SC from campus to cheer the Bonnies on.
It was a great game and a memorable experience, however I recall the Bonnies losing a close game and my wife remembers us winning.
Does anyone have a score for the game?

We lost 61-59. If I'm not mistaken, SC forfeited the following year.

Bonnies lost a close game to South Carolina who, I believe, was nationally ranked. They had Kevin Joyce among others and at halftime introduced their newst recruit for the next year whom you all have heard of, Alex English. Bonnies actually got out to a 15-2 or 17-2 lead and led the whole game. Listened to the Don McLean broadcast back at Bonas. Late in the contest the Carolina press took its toll, SC gained momentum and rallied. This was January of '72 and Bonnies just came off a rare and tough home loss to Duquesne (with hot shooting Ruben Montenez and Lionel 'Big Train' Billingy) , so the Carolina loss was another bitter one. After the game SC coach the late Frank McGuire said he never had a team come back from such a deep early deficit to win.
The next year SC came to Olean and took another close heartbreaker. Bill Moore was doing a nice job defending seven foot Danny Trailor of SC. Moore fouled out late, Trailor started scoring and the Gamecocks got a close one.
The snow forfeit game was either '77 or '78. I think it was the latter year.
Best of luck to the Bonnies vs X.

I also remember listening to that game. Those were the days when a male cheerleader at many southern schools would lead cheers over the PA system while the opponent had the ball. I distinctly remember his voice booming through the radio competing with Don's play-by-play call.

Ray and Res, both of you are absolutely on the mark.
This was a great road trip that we took our senior year at Bona's, and witnessed everything you stated first-hand, sitting on the floor under the basket posing as male Bona cheerleaders, since that was the only way we could gain access to the sold-out Coliseum.
I'll spare you the details!!

Speaking of Billy Moore, does anyone have the guide to show how many varsity points Billy scored for Bonas in his short career?

Just found an old stat sheet from a South Carolina @ Bona game in 1973. Talk about a loaded team, Gamecocks had Kevin Joyce 9-22, Alex English 4-11, Brian Winters 6-13, and Mike Dunleavy 6-10! Even though English had an off night shooting he still pulled down 12 boards. The team we put on the floor was very near the end of the Weise regime: Carl Jackson 10-16, Billy Moore 1-10, Glen Price 10-21, Steve Hocker 6-12, and Jimmy Wallace 3-9. The only sub for us was Mike Mayurnik 1-4. I always thought Mayurnik could have been decent if he gave a little effort. Once he arrived on campus with his 4 year ride he really did nothing but smoke and drink. Mayurnik was definately a disappointment. The Bonnies were 10-10 at this point while South Carolina was a very respectable 15-5. The final score on this February day was South Carolina 75- St Bona 74. The sheet is old and hard to read but it looks like February 10, 1973. I have plenty of these great old treasures along with uniforms and pre-game wear from those early days. It sure was great growing up with the Brown Indians! See you all in Atlantic City for the A10 tournament along with our Bonnies!!!

Norender & co... If Bonnies get to AC you have to meet my chalk talk editor Chris DiSano . He would love to exchange stories of the past and touch base with Bona faithful. Hey, he has two alums on CCT. Chris is really impressed with Schmidt and admired the Bonnies' fans passion and devotion, even during those recent tough times.
On that SC game in '73 . Remember it like yesterday. Cold as a 'female dog' ouside that afternoon, Bonnies gave a good effort only to fall (after Moore who was playing solid D fouled out) in the stretch. Forgot about Brian Winters. He was on board in '72. English & Dunleavy were frosh in '73.
Thanks for rekindling the memories.
Off to over PC-Hall tonite at the Rock.

You know I would love to talk Bona b-ball with anybody. I am lucky to still have my dad around as he has opened up to me about much of the behind-the-scenes problems and other things about Bonas the average fan doesn't know. My dad was a part of Bonas since setting foot on campus in the fall of '49. One of the sadest stories is how the Brown Indians were placed on probation in 1969, it never should have happened!

I meant to say hello to my old friend drray. There is NO BETTER SOURCE for Bona b-ball than drray. Somehow I am always lucky enough to bump into him during the season. Still can picture him running all over God's creation in beautiful Western New York. See you in AC in March Ray...GO BONAS!!!

sad thing about billy moore is that he was chaz barkley before there was a chaz barkley..moore was 6'5" and about 220 lbs and could move inside and out..saw him absolutely tear pat cummings a new one down at st frannies of pa and hoop camp..every night the instructors would play..moore, cummings, kevin porter [balt bullets], clarence hopson, norm van lier..moore dominated..he was from nearby altoona..his brother johnny had a very nice nba career..billy lives out in san diego now..st franny was coached by sbu-er peter lonergan at the time.

I was living in Austin, TX when Johnny Moore was playing for the University of Texas, he was a terrific ballplayer. Didn't know his brother played for the Bonnies.
