Portpasses, I couldn't agree with you more. The student chants have lacked creativity, as well as class, for some time now. Unfortunately, I think the problem may be rooted within the admissions department. If we don't see anything wrong with admitting a student who doesn't "give a ****!" about swearing in front of a four year old girl, why would we expect our student section to show any class or creativity during a game? Granted, you may be able to make the argument that one bad apple spoils the bunch but it seems as if we have more than one bad apple in this case.

Cue the snark meter on this one:
Didn't way back in the day the students sit and dress according to what floor they lived on? Didn't they also have their own cheers? I wish somebody could confirm this.

Ok cheer team here is one of my all-time favorites:
Step 1: chant "Lets Go Bonas" Step 2: clap twice Step 3: clap three times really quick Step 4: repeat as many times as possible

Cue the snark meter on this one: Redundant, of course. Though I did get a kick out of your recent comment regarding Mr. Bilas and your personal Mt. Rushmore.

My apologies. Upon reflection, I guess it's merely unnecessary (well, for most of us at any rate), not redundant.

I think part of the problem is the student section needs to be rebuilt along with the team. Back when the team was good in the A10 the student section was full and students died to get a good seat. More students, more drinking, more creative chants. Each incoming freshman class could learn from the upperclassmen how to cheer at Bonas games, but when the upperclassmen stopped coming, the incoming freshman had to learn on their own, hence the "Go Bonas!" during the Hey Song being replaced with "You Suck!" and the lack of creativity.
After years of Sol students have become apathetic towards the team as it is not the place to be. As sad as it sounds, not having a good team for such a long period of time has wounded the student section. Give the team success and little by little the crowds will become bigger and louder.

what ruined the student section was allowing the red seat zombies to sit at floor level.
back in the day, the students dominated the floor level seating. kick the old farts back to the reds and make floor seating exclusive to the students is the best way to return the RC back to its true form.

Take an ad out in the BV, announcing that each Monday night at Hickey you're going to practice some new chants for the upcoming games. It shouldn't be that difficult...you're only talking about a few hundred students. Oh no.... Just had a terrible flashback to circa 2005. Fr. Pat (smell ya) and his band of "Reilly Rowdies" captains (RA's/bible humpers) held a gathering in the HOF room to practice some new respectful cheers, and talk about some other BS. Since it was bona bball related, I decided to show up with a couple friends. It was one of the worst experiences of my college career. The cheers that these alter boys came up with were so lame we couldn't take it. I was so embarassed for these clowns showing us things like the "silent cheer", we had to sneak out the back during the meeting. I wish I could remember the other cheers they proposed. Actually, no I don't.

I think we can improve our chants the most if we let you guys who are seeking creative chants, into the student section. I'm sure you guys can say some real cool chants together and really light a fire under our asses and scare away the xavier players. Because when you were in the student section, you were probably the coolest fan coming up with creative chants and pleasing the fans left and right, while stil remaining classy and charming, right?

It pains me that I can come across as sincere. Now you're being even more disingenuous than usual, my friend. I have been there, as they say, and I know it pleases you to no end, which it should. Just try to be a little judicious in its application, please.

Just one problem Pete -- not enough students to dominate the floor level seating. You think the school is going to give those tickets and the revenue up to see empty seats?

I guess I'm just on old guy looking back at good times.
I graduated in 1987. At that time the team was respectable. Every student had the price of a season ticket priced into their tuition. I would say that 75% of the student population showed up.
My fresman year , the various dorm floors were there in their colors ( 2nd dev west= all good bears eat the honey).
this environment does not exist and its too bad

"And I remember my Calculus class getting chewed out by Ralph King the morning after the Georgetown game my Freshman year. "
Ralph was an Icon......when I was a freshman (1960), Ralph provided a tutuorial on game behavior, what to do, and what not to do. Great memories, I can still picture him as if it was yesterday.

I can understand the cynicism of the last generation of bona students.
Here is what i suggest- Find a current bona student who can mobilize the masses.
We will recruit bona bandwagon members from the past 5 decades and we will meet. we will discuss why the rc was once one of the most feared places to play in the country.
we will discuss what I hope will be a great legacy coach schmidt will leave.
we will make sbu great again.
