I sure missed being there tonight & missing the post game festivities at the Burton. I know that those that made the trip & were at Rose Hill last month thought it was Ground Hog Day. The similarities to the end of that Fordham game, with the lead dwindling in the final couple of minutes, was startling. That 5 point swing in literally seconds around the 1:21 mark was something rare to see. Once again the Bonnies prevailed.
This was a physical game where we won the crucial battle on the boards & outscored the Explorers 46 to 32 in the paint. Their big guards were not as successful as usual posting up inside. Of course the presence of The Professor, lurking in the background, tends to alter shots in addition to the 6 blocks he had. Our inside game along with key perimeter shots from Matthews & Benson was needed to offset our 22 TOs which created 26 points for La Salle. I loved Benson’s enthusiasm on the floor & even on the bench swinging his towel. This kid wants to go to AC in the worst way for the first time in his career.
Glad to see a solid game from Malcolm. He really needed it after his last outing at the RC. Most likely his best game with 14 pts, 9 boards on 35 mins. His effort is always there. We now stand 2 wins ahead of GW, Charlotte & Fordham with 7 to play. GW & Fordham have 8 to play & Charlotte 9.
Very nice win Bonnies!

Nice report, as usual, wgt. I'm glad Malcolm had one of his best games of the season, too. Bonaballa, you gotta remember that Malcolm is still only a soph and even though he isn't "Tim Winn" out there, he is the best we have right now and helped us win a big game. I like Blackburn, too, but it's not like Ray has been close to "Tim Winn" performances, either. Give Malcolm his due when he deserves it, would ya?

Its a lot easier to take the turnovers when Malcolm actually decides to go to the basket and create a little offense. His jumpshot is terrible and he can only go left, but he is big and strong and has a pretty decent first step. He needs to be agressive more like he was tonight. Hopefully this boosts his confidence a little bit and he continues to do this. We can also only hope that as he progresses with games like this, the mental mistakes will start to go away. I am amazed he thought he couldn't pick that ball up after dropping it. Even if it would have been a turnover, which it wouldn't have been, they would have got the ball out of bounds and not allowed an easy layup. Completely amazed at that play.

Malcolm and Hall sometimes make plays that makes you wonder if they have any basketball IQ. However, both of these guys are so needed on our team in order to get to the 5 A-10 wins which would be good and if SBU can get to 6 wins that would be awesome.

anyone see eleby's block on lasalle's break away? i don't think ray would of done that. also 9 rebounds is impressive for a pg. also it seems like the longer ray is out, some fans are expecting him to be a larger impact when he returns, than before he got hurt? his A10 play had been struggling...jmo

The twists & turns of this game makes the point that this was a team win with so many contributing in different ways. Malcolm's 9 boards were just one of the many things done to get the needed win. Plays at the end of the game tend to get the focus on identifying key contributors. I thought that Matthew’s two made FTs with just 17 secs left was gigantic. It took us from a 3 pt lead to 5. Just prior to that up 3 @ 1:10 Eleby misses the front end of his 1 & 1 opportunity. In the final 24 secs Schmidt needed to call two TOs to set up the inbounds play (area we are having big problems with). Looked like it was designed to get it into Matthew's (our best FT shooter in conf play) hands & they were successful. He gets fouled & sinks his 19th & 20th FTs out of the 21 conference foul shots he has taken. Those were big foul shots.

This was my first game of the year in person and there was much to like. Eleby played "long", in there rebounding and blocking shots. He did make mental mistakes but effort could be seen by him and the rest. It was a fun game to watch and enjoyed seeing many old friends (Jimmy, Tony, Stan, Firk, Chris, Chris Jr, Bill F, Leslie, Tom, Pete, Walt ,JH etc). Got to talk to Coach Schmidt & Steve Watson later and it was refreshing to listen to their genuine enthusiasm.
The generation gap was evident as we ate breakfast in Hickey Sunday ($4.50; what a bargain!) and the most popular cereal was Lucky Charms and no bran cereal of any kind. Can you believe it ? Students must get all their fiber from beer huh ?
We're talking about going to Philly for the Joe's game in a few weeks...we're brave souls. Haven't been to Philly to see a game since 1970 and the loss to Nova (remember the "over & back" call)
