It is with sadness that I post that Chuck Daly, NBA Hall of Fame Coach, has passed away of pancreatic cancer. He was a native of nearby Kane, Pennsylvania and played for St. Bonaventure University in 1948-49.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Daly family. Chuck died from pancreatic cancer. For those of you who don't know, pancreatic cancer is one of the worst types of cancer. There is a small chance of beating this SOB of a disease. My father died of pancreatic cancer 14 years ago. He went from a vibrant man to shell of himself. Once diagnosed, he died within four months.
It seems like many famous people have been diagnosed with this disease lately - Randy Pauch of Last Lecture fame, Ruth Bader Ginsberg of the Supreme Court and Patrick Swayze of Dirty Dancing and Ghost fame.

In the summer of '74 I attend the Larry Wiese Basketball Camp and Chuck was a guest lecturer one bright, sunny morning. He was the head coach at Penn and I remember seeing him coach against the Bonnies at the Kodak Classic a few years earlier in Rochester (we should have won that game, lost by 1 point when we missed several last-second shots). As campers we were on the outdoor courts and he was teaching us defensive drills. He stressed that defense wins championships and was proud he attended Bonas but eventually transferred to Bloomsburg (Pa.). Larry and Chuck were friends. I recall him on the chow line in Hickey for lunch and he sat at the table with Larry, Satalin, Billy K, Hoffman....etc. When the Pistons won NBA titles in back to back years ('89 and '90) I thought back to defensive principles which he stressed. Hard-nose, no-nonsense defense certainly won out. Condolences to the Daly family; Chuck will be missed. Once a Bona men, always a Bona man. -- TM

Too bad the Bonnies didn'tmake a 1948-49 team picture. Anybody know if the Laurel of that year has Chuck's picture in it?

I was at the Kodak Classic and it was a "classic" ...'71-'72 season...crushing loss as we would have been ranked with a win. The hotel took a beating if I remember right.

My condolences to the Daly family.
I was at that Penn game at the Kodak classic and my favorite part was when the Penn cheerleaders started to unroll a large banner that read; ......Gant can't decode Morse (B. Morse being their star player) and Matt was running by in warm-ups and deliberately ripped it in half.

Are you implying that one or more Ivy Leaguers couldn't spell Matt Gantt's name correctly?
