Speaking of Hofstra, both the Pride and Boston University have been mentioned as schools exploring the idea of upgrading their conference affiliation. The Atlantic 10, which would be a dream target for both schools, has no room right now, but that could eventually change. We'll have to see how this one shakes out. Hofstra's CAA Future and other news (links) May 9th, 2009 by Raphielle Johnson
Could Hofstra be in the market for a new conference? That could very well be a possibility according to Newsday's Steven Marcus, who reported in an article Thursday that the school is pondering leaving the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride, who left America East to join the CAA in 2001, may have the Atlantic 10 in mind for a potential move. But with the A-10 having fourteen members already it's tough to see them making that move. Playing in "southern dominated" league, Hofstra hasn't made an NCAA Tournament appearance since they were a member of America East.
The move was made to ensure a home for the Pride's then-independent football program, allowing them to join the Atlantic 10's football league (eventually the CAA took over the football league). With head coach Tom Pecora welcoming back a talented squad that could challenge for the CAA's automatic bid, this news adds an interesting subplot to Hofstra's 2009-10 campaign.
Hofstra also made news on the transfer front Saturday, signing guard Mike Moore according to Adam Zagoria. Moore, who averaged 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for Fordham this past season, will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and have two years of eligibility remaining. Trey Blue has also left the Fordham program, signing with Illinois State. Meanwhile, star freshman guard Jio Fontan continues to wait for the school to release him from his scholarship, something the program has said it would not do.
Why won't Fordham release Fontan? Prevailing wisdom early on (and likely true) had it that their recruiting class for this season would fall apart if Fontan were to leave. Lance Brown and Chris Gaston are the headliners for a five-player class that could go a long way in reversing the Rams' fortunes following a three-win campaign. But could there also be the fear of Fontan staying in the area to play out his final three years? That's what Blue said in an interview with Zagoria, stating that "the Fordham community, they think he's going to Rutgers, that's not it." With Fontan heading to Puerto Rico shortly to prepare for the U-19 World Championships it will be interesting to see whether or not a solution comes quickly.
