ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - There are just five days remaining to vote for women's basketball senior Katelyn Murray and junior Dana Mitchell in the 2009 Buffalo FAN Awards. Murray is up for College Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Mitchell is in the running for Women's Western New York College Player of the Year accolade.
The Buffalo FAN Awards will be held at Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, N.Y. on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 7:00 pm.
There are four nominees for each award, and the winner in each category is determined by which nominee receives the most votes by the fans. To help Murray and Mitchell win their respective awards, go to www.buffalofanawards.com and start voting now. The voting polls will close on Monday, May 18.
Murray has been piling up accolades since her stellar senior season came to an end in late March. Murray has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team, the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team and the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Women's Scholar-Athlete Team due to her success on the court and in the classroom. The Harrisburg, Pa., native carries a 4.0 grade-point average in biology while posting stellar numbers on the court as well. Murray finished her career in 12th place on the Bonnies all-time scoring list with 1,129 points, after averaging a career-best 11.4 points per game this past season.
Mitchell was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team, for the second straight season, following a junior campaign that saw her finish second in the A-10 in scoring, at 15.2 points per game. The Fairless Hills, Pa., product led the Bonnies in scoring and rebounding (5.7), while scoring in double figures in all 14 A-10 games this season. Mitchell also became just eighth player in the program's 38-year history to score 1,000 points and collect 500 rebounds during her time in the Brown and White.
The FAN Awards is a new organization led by former NFL great Ahmad Rashad that recognizes extraordinary athletic and academic achievements by high school, collegiate and professional athletes in a certain region. Buffalo and South Florida are the only two regions that have been selected so far for this amazing event.
