The Arizona Daily Star reports today (May 14) that a former Univ. of Ariz. recruit (6-7, 200 pound forward who averaged 9.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg as a freshman at JC) plans a visit to Bona:
Saying he's heard nothing from the new UA coaching staff in a month despite his commitment to former UA assistant coach Reggie Geary in February, former Los Angeles junior college forward Tremayne Johnson is now looking elsewhere. "It was weird," Johnson said Wednesday. "I'm tired of everything that's going on." Johnson said he would visit Eastern Washington this weekend and St. Bonaventure next week, while Nevada and Western Kentucky also have expressed interest. Johnson, who played at Los Angeles Southwest College in 2007-08 but took last season off, will have three seasons to play Division I basketball after getting his two-year associates degree this spring.

Some more on Johnson:
Is Johnson worth a ride? 04/20/2009 10:33 PM Bruce Pascoe
So is Tremayne Johnson worth a scholarship from Sean Miller? It’s been hard to tell, though Miller is likely to determine it himself soon.
Johnson didn’t stand out for a talented Artesia High School team (he’s No. 23) two years ago and he didn’t play at all this season after playing a limited role as a freshman at Los Angeles Southwest College. Southwest coach Reggie Morris offered only lukewarm opinions about Johnson when I called him after Reggie Geary offered Johnson a scholarship in February. “This is a shock to me,” Morris said. “I thought maybe a Division II school would take a chance on him.”
But Johnson’s trainer and former traveling team coach, Etop Udo-Ema, says Morris is not high on Johnson only because Morris is miffed that Johnson opted to save a year of eligibility for Division I rather than play for Morris as a sophomore. By sitting out this season, Johnson can play three seasons of Division I ball (he is believed to be eligible immediately, unlike many juco players who must get their two-year degree).
One of the few recent outside opinions about Johnson comes from Jerry Mullen, who invited Johnson to his well-regarded juco camp last summer.
Mullen said in February that Johnson was long and athletic at 6-foot-7 but lacked the bulk to play power forward at the Pac-10 level and the three-man skills to play on the perimeter. But if he developed either of those — and he could — it might work out.
“He probably needs strength to play in that league,” Mullen said. “Or he needs to improve his skill level to be a 2-3. He’s very athletic and his upside is good. He has some three skills: He can put the ball on the floor a little bit. … His ballhandling and passing skills are average. …He’s a four but he’s trying to make the conversion to a three.”
Udo-Ema said Johnson has been developing those skills while working out regularly in a facility near LAX.
“He’s jumping over guys and he can shoot it, too,” Udo-Ema said. “He’s not a drop-dead shooter but you can’t just back off him, and he can get to the glass. There’s no better high school player available than him except maybe a (uncommitted Top 10 player) John Wall.”
Udo-Ema said Colorado will visit Johnson on Tuesday and that Miller would probably see him after that. At that point, Johnson is hoping his “commitment” will finally turn into an opportunity to sign a binding letter-of-intent for UA.
“Everything is good. I’m still committed,” Johnson said today. “Once I meet with him and we connect, if he likes what he sees, will go from there.”

What a confusing spring. First, it appears that Brooks is a lock, but he doesn't even visit. Then it's reported that the coaching would rather have Dixon anyway. Dixon visits but they don't offer Dixon and now they're scrambling. I like the staff and progress has been made, but it sure looks like they are coming up short this spring.

Fools gold. It's always tempting to lust after a recruit that was formerly commited to a big time program like Arizona. However, since he's not a true 3 or 4, I'd see him fitting in somewhere behind at least Hall, Simmons and Cook, if not Houseknecht. Forget about the fact he hasn't played competitively in over a year, he wasn't very productive when he did, averaging a pedestrian 3.5 points and three boards at Artesia HS as a senior -- three years ago.
If one man, apparently Sean Miller's, trash is another man's treasure, I'd rather we not be the second guy. Still, not only did something make Reggie Geary think Johnson could play in the Pac-10, the others currently involved in him are all good programs. I guess I'll have to eat crow on this one.

I'm on the fence with both MITCHELL and now JOHNSON. I keep thinking it's a crap shoot with either, I'd hate to pass on one and see him light it up in college. Even if neither pan out both of their athleticism would at least make them entertaining to watch. He(JOHNSON) may have put up "pedestrian" numbers at ARTESIA HIGH, but look who his teammates were:JAMES HARDEN, DEREK GLASSER, & RENARDO SIDNEY all D1 players so TREMAYNE probably didn't get many touches, also I read he was 6-2 when he was on this team then had a late growth spurt. He had some nice dunks on YOUTUBE, but as you know, this doesn't tell you much. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfzpH...eature=related

His profile from his junior year (2.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg) lists him at 6-6 and shows him throwing down a two-handed dunk, so I don't think he was 6-2 anytime recently.

I'm on the fence with both MITCHELL and now JOHNSON. He had some nice dunks on YOUTUBE, but as you know, this doesn't tell you much. Compared to Mitchell, I feel a lot more confident about Johnson. Tremayne Johnson was going to Arizona until Lute Olson's abrupt retirement. If Lute Olson feels Johnson is good enough for Arizona, have to believe he has enough talent for Bonas. Clincher for me will be Schmidt's decision. Schmidt looked at Dixon, who had impressive press clippings, but passed. Now he gets to look at a player without the impressive press clippings. It will be interesting to see if he offers Tremayne Johnson. As for Johnson's minimal stats of 9 ppg. These are minimal stats for a scorer, but Johnson's expertise is being a "lock down defender with a big time wing span" as described by talent scout Van Coleman. JUCO Junction ranked Johnson as the number 2 wing forward at an event that showcased the top JUCO players on the West Coast (link at bottom). Here is what they said about Johnson (article was also impressed with former Bonnie Delonte Taylor). Tremayne Johnson 6-7 LA Southwest - One of the guys who has unlimited upside. Can do a little bit of everything from shoot the jumper, attack the basket and lock up on D. High major talent that needs a little polishing. Big time athlete who plays super hard. Actually Sipo, I think you can tell quite a bit from Tremayne's video. Tremayne is an extremely athletic big man with incredible dunks, but more impressive was his big time rejections. Check out the youtube video of Tremayne Johnson. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfzpHNgx9osjucojunction.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=1425&mid=114621023&sid=1090&tid=114621023&style=2&Override=1uahoopscoach.com/?p=1478

I wasn't as impressed as Chuck with his limited Youtube clips. Actually, he barely left off the ground on a number of them. How about the dunk where his team was blatantly playing 4-on-5, while he hung out at the opposing free throw line, waited until his team got the ball, and threw down a routine dunk? Pretty nice goal tending highlight, too. Anyway, in the second link Chuck posted, from Juco Junction, anyone else catch their No. 1 wing guard? This guy used to be listed at a generous 6-foot-4, but 6-6? 1. Delonte Taylor 6-6 St Bonaventure transfer - One of the most dominant offensive players at the event. Super strong guard who can score from the perimeter or off the dribble. Legitimate high major talent that will be serious impact player in most mid major conferences.

Surprised by the negative posts in this thread. 1. JUCOs that can't play occurred under Solomon. Schmidt's JUCOs (Hall, Carter and Blackburn) all were contributors on a team that won 15 games. In only 2 years Schmidt took the Bonnies from 7-22 (Solomon's last year) to 15-15. He accomplished this with basically his own players. The only exception was Eleby, who received mixed reviews. Clearly Schmidt recognizes talent. 2. It was SirElton on the Bevel, who reasonably surmised the Bonnies would be better off with Dixon. He made this prediction based on Dixon's press clippings (this years top ranked big man from Canada). Unfortunately Dixon's audition in the RC did not match his impressive press clippings. Unlike his predecessor, Schmidt has shown he refuses to use scholarships on borderline D-1 talent. 3. It is understandable how people can get different opinions from a "limited" video clip. Still believe this video clip supports talent scout Van Coleman's statement “he is a super athletic wing player.” I would be thrilled to see Tremayne goal tend like he does in this video. Anxious to hear about Tremayne's audition at the Reilly Center. If Schmidt offers him a scholarship, I'll assume Tremayne is a good player for the Bonnies, because Schmidt has a good batting average with the players he recruited for the Bonnies. Garf thank you for the post on Tremayne. uahoopscoach.com/?p=1478

Advanced apologies to Chuck, but at risk of being totally off and also sounding like the Bandwagon police, I'm not so sure anyone should continually use the term "audition" regarding a recruiting visit. This implies Schmidt is watching the kid scrimmage, clipboard in hand, which I think is illegal and I'm sure is not the case. Again, I could be way off here, but I'm afraid Chuck is implying something totally off-base.

The recruits visit is similar to an audition........against the guys on the team. They play full court to see how he stacks up against them. Schmidt may not be watching with clipboard in hand but the current players can tell him what a kid brings to the table. It is encouraging to have a coach that brings kids in and doesnt offer everyone a ship. He is particular on who he wants, and is thinking not only about next year but 2 or 3 years down the road. Looks like some interesting visits on the horizon, with summer school starting soon and most of the players to be here we should begin seeing some transfer kids visiting the RC.
