collegechalktalk.com/Schmitty's A-10 interview. And also, with the Indians having a get together at SBU last week - HEY CHIEF WHAT ABOUT GIVING US OUR NAME BACK !!! If you look back, this program has just stunk after we lost our name " THE BROWN INDIANS ".

The Chief was not the one who took our name. The name Bonnies has been used for over 50 years on the radio. The last I heard of Brown Indians was in 1993 when Dr. Wickenheiser formally retired it. Dr. Wickenheiser is from the Dakotas and knew about the problem of colleges with Indian names. He thought it best to retire the name and take the Indian head from the RC and also redo the floor with a big orange basketball at the center.

While I too want the "Brown Indian" back, either as a nickname or just as a mascot, it really was the NCAA who, due to 'Political Correctness', was responsible for forcing out Native American names and mascots as insensitive and inappropriate. The last holdout I think was North Dakota State (could be wrong), a perennial D-1 hockey program who was still fighting the NCAA in court a couple of years ago. The other aberration is FSU who got to keep the "Seminoles" because, I believe, the Seminole Nation gave their permission and endorsement. Could be wrong! The reigning authority made the assumption that all Native American images were parodies and probably did not think that the image could be positive and in tribute to the peoples talents, resoucefulness and courage! Just anoter $.02!

Some other colleges that come to mind that still use Indian or native names are Hawaii-Rainbow Warriors; San Diego State-Aztecs; Utah-Utes; Bradley-Braves; William & Mary-Tribe; Alcorn State-Braves; Illinois-Fighting Illini and Texas Tech-Red Raiders. It will be interesting to see how these schools comply with the NCAA directive.

How dead does this horse have to be before we stop beating it?

Perhaps we could meet with the Seneca Nation and come to some agreement on resurrecting the name - building bridges with the native american community instead of staying apart. There could be great opportunity here.

There could be great opportunity here. Because a college basketball program getting into some type of sponorship agreement with an organization that runs gambling casinos would go over great with the NCAA!

If this is an attempt to be pithy, I think you missed the mark otherwise I have no idea what you are talking about. I am guessing that you have lived in the area all your life and probably have a better sense of the existing relationships with the Seneca so if the idea is ridiculous educate us, if it has merit expound please. Thanks

I guess I need to be clear - I would agree with capamerica that we would not create financial relationships with the Nation but rather cultural including building relationships via education programs, music, historical, and student contact with the Nation, that type of thing. If the idea lacks merit, OK.

What makes you think that today's Seneca Nation would be in favor of the nickname Brown Indians? I'd be more inclined to think the opposite.

I don't really have an opinion either way, it is just an idea to consider. Also, as our sales people always tell me, any question unasked is already no. Again, just an idea to ponder.

Cas, Not that I think it's a bad idea...I just don't really care about the topic one way or the other. Just poking fun because this topic is brought up 2-3 times every off-season. I thought we could save the trouble of creating multiple threads by combining the "Revive the Brown Indians" thread with the "Revive the Football Program" thread this year.
