Keys to Improvement for 09-10 Season
1.Improved point guard play. Reducing turnovers and getting to the charity stripe a must for this position.Like what I hear about"O's" game. 2.Team free throw shooting must be at 70-75% range. All winning programs capitalize at the charity stripe. 3.Offensive rebounds, a team goal and mindset. Easy way to pick up 6-10 points per game. A difference maker. 4.Lock down man to man D. It all starts with the guards winning their battle and denying first and second options. Then they are forced to rush a shot to beat the clock. 5.Everyone plays under control within the system. Many times last year we had guys go off the reservation.(sorry not P.C.) 6.Finish ballgames. A big part of this is learning how to stem changes in momentum. Probably more of a coaching objective than a player objective. 7.Keep pounding the defensive boards. Overall a good job last season out rebounding our opponents on the D end. May be more of a challenge this time around, and everybody needs to crash the boards on every play. Net result is a few extra wins . 8.Stay out of Foul Trouble. Defense starts with quick feet, and at this level they will undoubtedly call that tick tack reach in every time. Establish positioning and holding it can be taught, and strength helps. Lack of depth will certainly hurt here. 9. Recruit and sign 2 A-10 caliber athletes, one of which who can start during his frosh year would be ideal. We must get two in the early period. Waiting has not proved to be good for us with spring/summer signings.
These are just my thoughts. I certainly encourage you to add your own thoughts to this as I'm sure I missed a lot.
By the way, this is not meant as a criticism of the staff at all. Just for some lively "Board Discussion" as we are all backroom quarterbacks. "Stay thirsty my friends"

With the additions of Ogo and Lewis the Bonnies would probably be a tournament team if they had Greese at PF. The loss of Greese leaves the Bonnies lacking a proven post player (paired up with Andrew) who could: 1. Score in the paint (Greese shot 55.3% from the field, 2nd to only Andrew). 2. Strong rebounder (2nd on the team averaging 6.1 rebounds a game). 3. Having the size to match up defensively with other big and physical post players in the A-10. 4. Physical play in the paint, which often led to garbage points. Greese "lunch pail"play in the paint will be be difficult to replace. Biggest need for this team is for House, Simmons or Cook to develop into a quality post player. Team will probably start Jonathan at PF, but the team will still need a post player to provide 20-25 quality minutes off the bench. This team needs to become a full court high octane offense, which we have been anticipating since Schmidt was hired. Bonnies lack the perimeter shooting to run a half court offense. Bonnies 135 three pointers ranked 320th in the nation (link at bottom). With the loss of Greese, team now lacks another scoring option in the paint. Afraid we will see teams doubling Andrew in a half court offense. statsheet.com/mcb/teams/st-bonaventure/team_stats?type=all

Chuck, I think it's a stretch to say the Bonnies would probably be a tournament team with Moe.
One, you have to wonder how many games Moe would have been suspended for whatever reasons. I believe Mark sat him for four last year, including the a-10 tourney game.
Two, we really have no idea what ogo and lewis will bring to the table. Lewis was a helluva a juco scorer, but will that translate to the A-10. And with Ogo, how will he adjust from juco to A-10. Not saying he's anything like a Terron Diggs, Jermaine Calvin or even a Ray Blackburn, but we saw how those juco pgs turned out. Not predicting that by any means, just bearing in my mind that this guy hasn't played a d-1 game.
I do agree that Simmons and Cook are the swing guys for this team and that Greese is big loss (when he was on the floor). If Simmons and Cook are solid, this team could win 18-19 games, if they're not probably more like 13 or 14.
I gotta believe House is a project and wont contribute much this year. I think it's best to have modest expectations for him until he gets a couple years experience. Of course I could be wrong.

Richmond finished the regular season with just 2 more wins than the Bonnies and they made a post season tournament. Really do not think it would be a stretch for the Bonnies making a tournament, with them losing just D'Lancy, Benson and Blackburn. Maturity alone should give the Bonnies at least 2 more wins. Of course this is assuming Greese would be an ideal player and play in all of the games, which I agree would be a stretch. Do not think it would be correct comparing, Solomon's JUCOs to Schmidt's. Schmidt has proven he recognizes talent and this includes Blackburn. Prior to his injury, Blackburn was clearly a better player than Eleby (check out below link of earlier thread on non-conference report card of Bonnies) . From Schmidt's track record and what I hear, I believe Lewis and Ogo's contributions will be significant. bonabandwagon.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=4899

Sorry Chuck. Misunderstood what you meant by tournament team. I thought that meant NCAA. I agree then that the Bonnies could've made a postseason tourney if Greese were back.

5.Everyone plays under control within the system. Many times last year we had guys go off the reservation.(sorry not P.C.) 6.Finish ballgames. A big part of this is learning how to stem changes in momentum. Probably more of a coaching objective than a player objective. Agree 100% If we can learn to play a complete game I think we will have a great year. Too many times last year we let teams back into games with unnecessary turnovers and poor decision making in general. Getting rid of Blackburn will help (Canisus) but Hall and Eleby need to learn to slow the game down when the situation calls for it.

Guys, just a reminder. This years ooc is much tougher than last years. If we win 15 games with this schedule, we will have accomplished something. I'm thinking we will.

Guys, just a reminder. This years ooc is much tougher than last years. If we win 15 games with this schedule, we will have accomplished something. I'm thinking we will. "OOC is much tougher" is an understatement. With only 8 announced games (5 more to be decided) the Bonnies already have 5 games against teams with RPI's under 100. Compare this to only 2 teams on last year's OOC schedule. Here are the teams with their RPIs: This year teams (RPI)...............................Last year team (RPI) Syracuse (12).........................................Niagara (61) Illinois State (52).....................................Mississippi St. (62) Cleveland State (55) Niagara (61) Mississippi St. (62) Bonnies even have fewer cupcakes (RPIs over 300) than last year. This year Bonnies have zero cupcakes compared to 4 last year. Here is comparison of teams with RPIs over 100. This year teams (RPI)...............................Last year team (RPI) St. John's (146).......................................Robert Morris (107) Canisius (202).........................................Rutgers (191) Norfolk State (290)...................................Canisius (202) TBA......................................................Delaware (222) TBA......................................................Marist (261) TBA......................................................Princeton (283) TBA......................................................Bucknell (295) TBA......................................................Central Arkansas (319) ............................................................Eastern Michigan(320) ............................................................St. Francis PA (322) ............................................................MESU (338) www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2009/rpiwarrennolan.com/basketball/2009/schedule/St.%20Bonaventurencaapalace.com/component/sports/stbonaventure/ncaabIt will be an extreme challenge to match last year's 15 wins with this schedule. Makes it even more difficult when you consider Andrew is the only proven player above 6'5" on the team.

Chuck- Really solid points regarding the strength of schedule. This is a must for us to gain eventual recognition by knocking some of these teams off..
I agree 100% regarding the loss of Grease and we will certainly miss his PF skills and "lunch pail" performance. What we won't miss is the crappy attitude, immaturity with responsibility, and lack of dependability.
Andrew will definitely be challenged and both Cook and Simmons must provide some element of help. If not, Hall will play the 4 slot and we should expect everyone to double down on Andrew.
I do fondly remember when we didn't have anyone over 6'5, and still had one helluva combo with generous 6'6 listed George Carter teamed with the muscular 6'4 Billy Butler. They were the best front court tandem in the East.

This happens to be the Bonnies last tournament (NIT) team with 6'6" Robert Cheeks at center. JVBK used a full court offense to avoid half court offenses, with a 6'6" center and 6'6" PF (Vidal Massiah) who both lacked an interior game.

Never forget the UCONN game when Okafor tried to guard Massiah. He kept taking him to the perimiter and forced Calhoun to take him out. Bremer had like 33pts!

mangham - I was at that game, too! It certainly was fun sitting in my customer's seats at mid-court listening to all the stunned Huskies' fans surrounding us. They couldn't believe they were getting blown out at home. Some asked, "Where is St. Bonaventure, anyways? New York City?" At that point, I didn't know anything about JVBK other than name recognition. I really was psyched that we seemed to be building on the NCAA appearance from the year before. Little did I know what would go down only about 14 months later.

The concession area was buzzing at halftime, everyone wanted to know as much as they could about the team. As much as I dislike JvBK, he out coached Calhoun that day!
