A great story that I just had to share (perhaps something that Schmidty should tuck away for a future game):
Chunky in the soup
With a name like “Chunky,” you’d expect a guy to be a bit different. According to a story by Bruce Sayler of the Montana Standard, Chunky Thatcher is quite creative, too. Thatcher, who is the manager of the Butte All-Stars, who are competing in the Little League Senior Softball World Series in Roxana, Del. this week, was once the varsity boys basketball coach at Butte Central High School. During one particular game, Thatcher was quite displeased with the officiating that was going on. So he substituted a player into the game with explicit instructions to guard the opponent Thatcher deemed most responsible for his team’s struggles. You guessed it, one of the officials. “Because that's who was hurting us the most,” Thatcher explained. The stunt, while quite original, didn’t go ever real well with either the game officials or the bigwigs who govern high school athletics in Montana. It cost Thatcher two technical fouls on the spot — one for the doing it — and the other for laughing about it. It also earned him an “unsportsmanlike conduct” fine from the Montana High School Association.
