I wonder if this will change any recent decisions?
The Binghamton point guard Emanuel Mayben was arrested Wednesday night in Troy, N.Y., on a charge of selling crack cocaine.

Binghamton Player Arrested on Charges of Selling Cocaine By PETE THAMEL
The Binghamton point guard Emanuel Mayben was arrested Wednesday night in Troy, N.Y., on a charge of selling crack cocaine.
When police officers in Troy, Mayben’s hometown, arrested him on a previous charge of selling cocaine Wednesday, they said he was in possession of 3.4 grams of crack cocaine, a felony charge. Mayben was to be arraigned Thursday.
Mayben, nicknamed Tiki and a star on Binghamton’s first N.C.A.A. tournament team last season, was one of many talented but high-risk recruits brought in by Coach Kevin Broadus.
“I did all I could,” Broadus said Wednesday night. “I tried to help the kid.”
Even before the arrest, the Bearcats had been criticized by university faculty and coaches in the America East Conference. The New York Post nicknamed Binghamton “U.N.L.V. East.”
Mayben’s arrest is the third significant legal problem since Broadus took over the program in 2007. Miladin Kovacevic, who was not recruited by Broadus, was arrested after reportedly beating a student into a coma in a bar fight. He fled to his native Serbia after posting bail. Malik Alvin, a transfer student brought in by Broadus, was charged last year with stealing condoms from a local Wal-Mart.
Joel Thirer, Binghamton’s athletic director, did not return a call seeking comment.

Its really not a shocker, this was just a time bomb ticking it was only a matter of time. Its not like Binghamton didn't know this probably would happen during his tenure there. This is why SU said goodbye to him before he even enrolled.

Wonder if Corey Chandler (think that's the kid's name who transferred from Rutgers) is rethinking his decision

Why would he? This has nothing to do with Chandler... It was Mayben's last year anyways with no clear competition at the guard position next year he will walk in and be playing 35 minutes a game for them.

Not trying to turn this into a big debate, but had Bonas landed its star recruit two seasons ago, Karon Burton, you could insert Bonas into this story instead of Binghamton. The Bonnies have had there fair share of student athletes (and offered scholarships to a number of others) that ventured outside the law. Aloi, Ray, Bremer, Moore, Winn and Relph just to name a few.

Relph would have been smart enough to realize the real money is in the powdered cocaine, not the crack rock.

What's wrong with those players at Binghamton? They are attending a SUNY with one of the highest entrance standards. You'd think they'd be grateful for going there.

Let's give Malik Alvin some credit as by attempting to steal condoms shows he is trying to reduce college pregnancies and reduce the spread of social diseases in the world. It's a real shame he had to revert to stealing them since they are so very cheap! I always remember one guy who sold them (rubbers) out of his locker in high school. Now who was that guy? Isn't he a member of this board???

This program is heading for disaster. That translates into the "death sentence"
The President of Binghamton University came out today and said basically it is nice to give people second chances but this behavior of student athletes would not be reflective of Binghamton University.
He politely told his AD and Head Coach enough was enough!! Coach Broadhaus is now on a short leash.

Just a few weeks ago there were many members of this board hoping the Corey Chandler would transfer to Bonas. Roseboro looks better and better.

From Deadspin.com:
The Binghamton University basketball program has had its share of image problems thanks to many of the off-field indiscretions of its players, but don't you dare compare those animals to the ones in the actual zoo.
The whole Binghamton "zoo" motif began last week when five more players were tossed off the team for various offenses, prompting exasperated BU athletic director Joel Thirer to say, "Truthfully, if I'm the president? Who's running the zoo? "
Because Binghamton's basketball team is comprised of many African-Americans, Thirer's zoo imagery dances dangerously close to casual racism, but Amanda Padwa, the business manager for the actual Binghamton Zoo, cranks the insensitivity amp to 11, just for good measure. Padwa sent a pithy letter to the Binghamton Press where she calmly explains how comparisons between the team and the zoo are completely unfair to, you know, the zookeepers and caged wild animals under their care.
I am tired of hearing that blight on Binghamton University, the men's basketball team, being referred to as a "zoo." The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has just received re-accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the industry's governing authority. We achieved this status by being in the top 10 percent of all the zoos in the country.
Our animal care, safety, employees and educational and service standards are set high and met accordingly. Not one of our tigers has been arrested with cocaine. No otter knocks over old ladies to shoplift condoms. Our bear doesn't have temper tantrums and storm off his exhibit. You won't find any of our lemurs busted for smoking pot. So, please, stop insulting zoos by comparing those criminals to us.
Amanda J. Padwa
Business Manager
Binghamton Zoo
To be fair, you won't find any of Binghamton's players cruelly plucked from their natural habitat and forced to spend their lives in a small enclosed space behind bars for the rest of their lives. Oh wait.
