I think last night showed a lot about the kind of team that we are going to be this year. Although the competition wasn't as talented as the teams that we will be playing throughout the year, we could still see the differences from last year’s team. The biggest difference that I saw was that we did a much better job getting the ball to Andrew who was able to score at will against Mansfield. If we can do as good of a job at getting him the ball throughout the year as we did last night, and he stays out of foul trouble, he should be able to be one of the highest scorers in the A10, and possibly college basketball. Andrew's free throw shooting impressed me as well, making 9/10, after only shooting about 60% last year. One of many people’s concerns about Andrew’s game last year was finding his teammates, which he did a better job of doing last night.
Da’Quan did a pretty good job rebounding, and gave himself a few good chances to score inside, but from what I saw he had trouble finishing. If he can work on this he could be a legitimate driving threat this year.
Hall had a very solid game, looked good driving to the net, and will once again be key contributor to our success. My biggest concern about him is that he will once again have way too many turnovers against good teams.
Matthews showed me a lot of what he showed me last year, he is incredibly inconsistent shooting. If he shoots throughout the year like he did last night, he will become a liability on the floor and should be replaced by others who can better contribute. When he isn’t shooting well his missed shots become wasted possessions, which we cannot have against good teams if we want to win.
Ogo looked like the type of point guard that I think this team needs. He is extremely quick, and handled the ball well. Ogo WILL become our starting point guard at some point this year. He was able to bring the ball up quickly, and had the intensity that Eleby lacks. His shooting was perfect, 2/2 from the field, and 4/4 free throws, and overall, I believe, he will give us the best chance to win.
Eleby didn’t do much to impress last night, and didn’t shoot particularly well, going 0/2 from the field and missing 3/7 free throws. I would like to see him playing a little more at the 2 guard position, which is definitely what he is best suited for.
Conger had a lot of freshman mistakes, making a few bad decisions in his 9 minutes. He looked good on his 3 pointer, and I wish we could have gotten to see him shoot more. Hopefully those rookie mistakes will go down as he get used to playing at this level, and if he can do that he will become a great player in his Bonnies career, and possibly contribute a lot this year. Another thing I noticed about him was that when he came out of the game Schmidt came up to him specifically and looked to be giving him constructive criticism, which Schmidt doesn’t often do right when players come out of the game. This could possibly mean that Schmidt has plans for Conger.
Davenport looked good on offense, shooting 2/3 from the field and hitting both free throws he took. Like many others have mentioned, he did struggle a little on the defensive perimeter, but he will help us this year.
House, Simmons, and Leonard all didn’t play enough to really show me anything. I did though notice that House usually came in when Andrew came out; don’t know if he will as much throughout the season.
