I was at the Coaches vs Cancer semis tonight and it looks like Syracuse has rebounded from that early season loss to Lemoyne. I think it will be a very tough match up for us as the 2-3 zone will give us problems. Cal never was able to get into any kind of offensive rythm. Here are few things I noticed and im sure the staff will too when it comes time to prepare for Syracuse.
The frontline is big, strong, and pretty good. Between Miss St. and Syracuse our young bigs are going to get some great experience heading into to confrence play. Onuaku is a man among boys at 6-9 265 and Jackson at 6-9 240 looks like he made great strides in his game since last season. Wes Johnson is going to be a tough match up for anybody he is very athletic, can shoot, blocked some shots, and can gets to the rim off the dribble as well as finishing on the break. They blocked alot of shots tonight and rebounded pretty well out of the zone which can be difficult to do. This allowed them to get out and run and get easy buckets. One thing about Onuaku and Jackson is that it seems that they will try to bully into the paint with there back to baskets and didnt face up much. I think our bigs can take some charges against them.
In the halfcourt set when Cal was in man, they ran Rautins off screens from the baseline to the wing and he would deliver an entry to the post if he didnt have enough space for the shot. If they doubled down the cuse bigmen were good at seeing the double and kicking out to the open shooters. Closing out on the shooters is going to be big against these guys, we had problems against St. Johns in the first half doing this and i think Rautins and Jardine can stroke it better than the johnies backcourt.
Rautins has a nice stroke and works the two man game pretty well, when it comes to feeding the post. Jardine looked outstanding tonight completely outplayed Patrick Christopher. The guards were aggresive in the zone and Jardine jumped out into the passing lane quite abit for some steals and deflections. They were able to get away with this because the front court did such a good job at protecting the goal. Cals PG jerome randle is very quick and a nice player, played the best for Cal tonight and yet he was unable to settle his team against the aggresive zone. Marcus and Ogo will have a challenging game against the zone.
It is going to be a real tough game for us, especially if our 3 pointing shooting doesnt improve. I can see Hall having some success if we can move the zone via ball movement and get it to him on the baseline where he can attack the rim or find andrew at the elbow. I know it is a month away but I couldnt help going through the match ups in my head as i watched the cuse blow away the 12th ranked Golden Bears tonight. Lets start with taking care of Binghamton and we will cross this bridge when we come to it. Go Bonnies!
