Not so much integration as the money, rule changes, and TV.
First came Title IX in 1979. That meant spending less money on men and more money on women's sports
Then in 1985, after the Final Four was Georgetown, Villanova, St. John's and Memphis (State), the NCAA powers that be got together and passed some nice rule changes. All designed to stop "I-AAA" teams from being awesome at basketball and not so hot at everything else. The rule that every NCAA committee had to have at least 50% membership from the now BCS conferences is probably the biggest and most influential rule change in the NCAA history that no one knows about.
There used to be two spots on committees for the I-AAA schools, like a St. Bona, Villanova, Georgetown, etc.
Since football has driven every conference re-alignment, the basketball schools have lost at every available turn. That's why we are where we are.
The next "Blow" will be when the Big East splits and the Big East hoops schools raid some A-10 schools. then they'll be the new "A-10" and we'll be bumped down to CAA or MVC status.
