Thought there were 3 keys to the game last night.
1. Schmidt changing to a zone. Bonnies did not have anyone that could guard Turner or Coles. Malcolm and Chris are not quick enough for man defense against small quick players. Wished Schmidt would have used the zone against Niagara. Greg Logins is a difficult match up in man defense. He was able to post up Andrew for fade away jumpers or step outside and hit 3's.
2. Hall and Davenport crashing the offensive boards in the 2nd half. There were time it looked like Hall and Davenport were playing volleyball underneath the Bonnies basket. Hall was the MVP of this game, but Davenport was a close second.
3. Ogo at the foul line. With Hall, Matthews and Cook missing free throws at the end of the game, it brought back memories of last year's meltdown. Ogo going 4-4 at the line in the last minute was the difference between a 7 point win and a possible repeat of last year's game. Jonathan shooting 54% from the line, probably should not be out there in the last minute of a close game. What is up with Chris making only half of his free throws for the season?

I don't have any coaching credentials but, makes you wonder, bonnies took control of the game when Schmidt decided to go to the zone after finally realizing that his guards could stay in front of Canisius'. Then, by some stroke of genius, with less then 2 minutes left and a ten point lead, he goes back to man. Turner beats his man off the dribble three straight trips and cuts the lead to 5.
Also, I really need someone to tell me, since I am not a coach, what Matthews does so well that he deserves to play 40 minutes? He is a liability on defense and doesn't rebound. If this was Zarryon Fereti everyone would be all over him. Just like an announce once said about Fereti, "He is a type of player that keeps both teams in the game."

Agree with your 3 keys Chuck. I'd add a 4th. Our level of play while Andrew was sitting on the bench. JAC....Obviously Coach places a lot of trust in Chris as evidenced by the fact he averages the most playing time of any player this season. Some reasons for this: In total scoring he is just 3 points behind Hall who is our #2 scorer behind The Professor. Every team knows he is our ONLY threat from beyond the arc where he is #1 in the A10 in treys made & hitting at a very good 42% rate. With Chris sitting all defenses can totally collapse on the inside taking away not only opportunities for Andrew but also slashing lanes for Hall & Davenport.
Some have said the team has no take-charge leader. This traditionally came from our PG. I would say that Chris plays a role in this regard which Schmidt values & more importantly his teamates. His A/TO rate has dropped from last season but I feel Coach likes the ball in his hands when pressure is applied. The nature of his game (similar to Z in this regard) is that he never gets to the line where he is an excellent FT shooter. His only 6 FTAs this season doesn’t bare this out but this is way too small a sample to disregard the fact he was 82% from the stripe last season. Of course he only made 1-2 in the final seconds last night & up 7. I would say there are also intangibles that create Schmidt's comfort level with Chris leading the team in floor time.

Difficult to be critical of the Bonnies only 3 point shooter, but consider the following. 1. Chris going to the line for only 6 times this season is more of a concern than him making only half of them. Chris is even more one dimensional than last year, which is shown by him shooting 51 free throws last year and just 6 this year. We are 2 games from being beyond the mid point of the season. Attempting only 6 free throws indicates Chris is not taking the ball to the basket. 2. Last year Chris had the best assist/turnover ratio among perimeter players and this year he has the worse. 3. Chris is even averaging one less rebound a game this year. Chris is a valuable shooter, but so far this year it is the only thing he is providing the team. Leadership is important, but expected more production from Chris than just shooting 3 pointers. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teams/stats?teamId=179&year=2009sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teams/stats?teamId=179&year=2010

I agree with everything everyone said about Chris except I would like to mention just one thing. A shooter needs to have the ball in their hand when they get loose and this doesn't happen for him. We have some of the worst passers in the league. Also because the team knows Chris will shoot the three they stand still when he has the ball and he can't break his guy down off the dribble. Chris really need to start shooting some closier shots to open up the offense.
