Last year a second high profile recruit is declined admission to the University, despite being cleared by the NCAA. Coach gets mad and resigns, only to be hired by a higher profile program. His star point guard (who happens to be one of the highest rated recruits ever signed by the school) decides to go with his coach. The University loses its coach, the schools star player, every player from its prized recruiting class, the entire starting backcourt along with the top backcourt reserve and a starter in the frontcourt graduates. It is a given, even by loyal supporters of the University that the team will be taking steps backward after a 14-15 season and 8-8 in the conference.
A new coach is hired to pick up the pieces. He has 2 returning starters in the frontcourt and a disaster in the backcourt. He is left with a former walk-on and a transfer from Valpariso (who was a part time starter). These 2 players become his starting backcourt. Neither player is a point guard, but he has to choose one. He picks the 6'7" transfer from Valpariso, who happens to weigh 230 pounds. Not exactly your typical point guard, but he handles the ball better than the 6'5" former walk-on. The 5th starter, becomes a red shirt freshman, who is currently averaging 4.8 points a game.
The above school is Richmond, which had Jerry Wainwright leave for DePaul. Chris Mooney is the coach hired to pick up the pieces. Chris Mooney is doing better than anyone expected, by leading Richmond to a 11-11 record and a 4-5 record in the A-10.
Difficult to accept the Bonnies will be the underdog at home, especially considering the Bonnies basically lost nothing and added 4 new players, who are talented enough to send 3 starters to the bench. Clearly I can see the progress, Mooney is making in his first year, but I'm still questioning Solomon's progress in his 3rd year..
