After reading some posts tonight I thought of an idea that I wanted to throw out not knowing all the logistics, but think the overall concept could assist Bonas and possibly the hoops programs.
What if in the Fall/Winter when Bonaventure Men/Women are away the Reilly Center is home to a Regional High School Hoops Tournament. Even conducting such tournaments in the summer if need be.
It allows several teams/parents/ and soon to be college bound students to visit the University while we could include some type of informal Bonaventure history, tour etc etc.
Its a crazy thought, but I think one that might have some legs as we could rent the RC for a decent cost while assisting the local economy hotels/restaurants and showcasing our beloved University.

Go Bonas! This already happens ... it's called the IAABO Tournament and it's hosted at the Reilly Center each year between Christmas and New Years.

Does anyone know if we have a grant writing specialist on staff? There are firms that will assist in obtaining grants through personal contacts and it generally requires a small retainer and then a 3-5% take of the award. The fee is nowhere near the monies paid for the ill fated merger attempt these past two years. This would be the perfect source to lessen the burden on expenses being added to the general fund. To be clear, I mean a grant expert, not someone that is assigned to the responsibility on staff.

We also have the Mark Schmidt Camp in July that brings in 40-50 high schools and their families to campus for an entire weekend. School's ranging from NY and PA and even some Canadian schools once in a while.

Contract grant writers can be a good idea but not always the best idea. Very often they charge a higher fee than what was mentioned. Remember almost all grants come with "hand cuffs" and sometimes if you chase the wrong $$ simply for the sake of revenue, it can cost you more than the benefit gained. I suspect they have grant people on staff as is - don't know how many though.

Guys the key to the grant exercise is the expert knowing where to go, and how to write it, so they don't say NO. Further, ant grant program requires a project manager to steer the grant once received, and not allowing it to get off track.My son in law is a faculty member formerly at Emory and currently at Georgia State. He writes constantly to support his salary and lab projects and has them funded so as to not tax general fund and budget. It would be interesting to know what faculty members at Bona's does this.I'm curious if it is in place and has a high or low participation rate. I'm thinking in today's information age it should be high on every prof's job function.

...in addition to the absolute essential research in preparing to write a grant and the ability to craft a top shelf grant porposal, for the most part gone are the days when the "after the proposal submittal" relationship development effort which was so necessary to bring your grant in. Now for the most part, grants are submitted electronically, with little or no ability to develop a relationship with the funder. Most major universities have hundreds of development pros on the staff mining variuos sources of funding - grants (public & private), major gifts, planned giving etc. to mantian those resources costs $$$ WHICH WE ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY OF.
