Small Catholic colleges are particularly vulnerable to enrollment declines. They have gotten much of their enrollment from the Catholic high school system. The Catholic school system from elementary grades through high school has seen a precipitous drop in students and many schools have closed. The feeder system that was Catholic high schools is now not large enough to sustain Catholic college enrollments. Philadelphia Archdiocese School Enrollment - 35% decline from 2001-2012 - 5 of 17 remaining high schools closed in 2012 Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Archdiocese_of_Philadelphia_school_closings

More kids are choosing to attend state schools as tuition at private institutions no longer justifies the education being provided to them, minus a few of the prestigious, upper-echelon private institutions.

The biggest difference in the drastic change in facilities in the last 10-15 years at public and private schools. Public schools have been building apartment complexes, suites, student centers, and other impressive facilities with tax payer money while private schools have been fundraising to cover professor salaries and still have students living in traditional dorms. Tax dollars are making it hard for many private schools to compete.

In my opinion, enrollment suffered there because prospective students heard a rumor that they may be moving student seating at basketball games 18 inches further back...

Public colleges are still growing (despite declining # of 18 year olds) as they are more affordable. Public schools have been building apartment complexes, suites, student centers, and other impressive facilities with tax payer money while private schools have been fundraising to cover professor salaries and still have students living in traditional dorms. Tax dollars are making it hard for many private schools to compete. Public schools have a seemingly endless supply of public money. Do you think professors make less than at other schools, or that facilities are less costly to maintain? If we made public schools fundraise to meet budgetary restraints like a private school, the whole system would be better off. Instead, the public schools are being used to promote social issues, and that is killing smaller private institutions. I don't know about NY any longer, but in Florida, the state schools take turns getting tons of cash for upgrades, dorms, buildings, landscaping, etc. We have entered a time when we've now started downgrading education, by emphasizing it. A college degree is the new HS diploma.
