May 2, 2006
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure held its 2005-06 men's basketball banquet on Sunday, April 30, at the SBU Clubhouse Restaurant.
About 100 people attended the event, which included a season highlight video, the presentation of the team's annual awards and a talk by St. Bonaventure president Sister Margaret Carney. Bonnies coach Anthony Solomon presented each letterwinner with a framed team picture.
Senior guard Ahmad Smith was named the winner of the Rev. Anselm Krieger Most Valuable Player Award. Smith led St. Bonaventure in scoring for the second year in a row, averaging 15.9 points per game - good for eighth in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He also led the Bonnies in assists and steals and finished third on the team in rebounding at 5.6 per game. Smith was named to the All-Conference second team by the Atlantic 10 coaches, the second year in a row he was honored. Over his career, Smith scored 1,261 points - good for 23rd all-time at St. Bonaventure.
Junior center Paul Williams and sophomore forward Michael Lee were co-winners of the team's Most Improved Player Award. Lee doubled his averages from his freshman year in scoring, rebounding and blocks. He finished as the team's second-leading scorer at 12.7 points per game and also was the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder at 6.5 per game. Lee ranked among the top 20 in the A-10 in scoring, rebounding and blocks. Williams gave the Bonnies an inside presence in his first season of action. He averaged 10 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game, finishing seventh in the Atlantic 10 in rebounding. The North Bergen, N.J., native recorded a team-best five double-doubles, led the Bonnies in field goal percentage and was second in blocked shots.
Junior point guard Terron Diggs was given the Eddie Donovan Award, which is presented in honor of the late St. Bonaventure coach (1953-61). It is presented to a player who consistently puts team before self and sacrifices his personal statistics for the team's gain. Diggs, a starter in 19 out of his 26 games, averaged just 2.2 points per game but finished second in the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2-1).
The Rev. Brian F. Lhota Memorial Award went to senior guard Wade Dunston. This award is given in memory of the late University president to the player who by his desire, example, attitude and pride for St. Bonaventure basketball best exemplifies Reverend Lhota's life. Dunston took on the role of a defensive stopper this past season after finishing his junior year as the Bonnies' second-leading scorer. Dunston played in 27 games with nine starts and averaged 4.3 points per game.
Freshman forward Tyler Benson, an undeclared business major, received the team's Scholar-Athlete Award.
