Vinny spent considerable time searching for Bonnies legend Greg Sanders, and spoke with many who know and played with the all-time leading scorer. It's rare that we put together a piece of "investigative journalism", actually it's never happened before, but Vinny did a great job in writing this piece. Anyone old enough to remember the 1977 NIT team and Sanders will want to read this piece that also includes some stories for those seasons.....Hopefully you enjoy.... thebonablog.com/2016/02/08/the-mystery-of-greg-sanders/www.thebonablog.com

Maybe the mystery can be solved. Greg, and my classmate, Miles Aiken, someday can reconnect with the University and get the recognition they both deserve.

Excellent read! I remember Greg and Glenn as very flamboyant guys both on and off the court...I can still picture Greg van parked in the Shay-Loughlin parking lot. Both guys were flashy dressers and Glen was known for his hats! I vividly remember Greg's performance at the Garden and dancing in the RC to celebrate our NIT Championship. I am sorry to learn he has fallen on bad times...most definitely he jersey should be hanging from the rafters!

Wow. Heck of a story.
Maybe that article inspires him or his family to reach out. I am sure whatever hard feelings, if that's what the problem was, can be overcome after all these years.

Pete Wisniowski is a similar situation. Dropped out of sight and the SBU Alumni Office was eventually informed of his passing which occurred several years ago. Shame. "Wizzer" was a dependable contributor on the 69-70 undefeated team. Requiescat in Pace.

really interesting. hopefully this article can spark an initiative to get in contact with him and get his jersey put in the rafters. seems to only make sense to have your all time leading scorer hanging in the rafters.

By the way, I'm an investigative reporter and finding people is my specialty. I have an address and three promising phone numbers for Mr. Sanders. For journalistic purposes, I'm happy to share that information with you if you pm me. Perhaps he has a fascinating story to tell. I hope he's well.

Where there is a will, there is a way............the Hall of Fame Committee should make every effort to contact Greg. He was a certified Bonas superstar of that there is no argument. Certainly his number should be retired. He is richly deserving of that honor. With a three point shot allowed his numbers would have through the roof. One of the best pure shooters I have ever witnessed in 50 years of watching Bonas basketball. Just incredible range.
It took lots of hard work to get in contact with another lost Bona Superstar HOFer too - George Carter, very possibly the greatest all around athlete ever to attend St. Bonaventure (and the only athlete at SBU ever to be drafted by the NBA, NFL and MLB, not mention the ABA)...but it was a successful effort and he was finally located in Los Vegas and returned to Bonas. Maybe Greg just needs someone to talk to, to make contact, and maybe, just maybe he needs our help too.

Thanks for all the compliments on the article, all praise goes to Vinny. He is currently pursuing some phone numbers and a mailing address we've been passed along but we're not confident in Greg getting back to us. We will keep you updated of any developments from here out. It would be great to hear from him but it seems due to one reason or another that may not happen. www.thebonablog.com

I had stopped visiting your blog after some of the antics of one of the contributors on the message boards of other schools. I went back to read this. Let me say, this is the kind of thing that draws readers, not some of the other things that were going on. Good job.
I had heard most of the rumors about Sanders not being in communication, possible stroke, etc., but you did a good job of both reporting those and mixing in quotes from others to make it an interesting piece. The quotes from Hagan were great and sounded just like him.
I had one class that Sanders and Hagan were also in. It was a Sociology (Soc 102) class fairly early in the morning. It was the 2nd semester, and the prof had recently been told his contract was not going to be renewed. He didn't exhibit a lot of enthusiasm for teaching that class and was often late since it was his first class of the day just like ours. I'll give Greg and Glenn credit - they were there (mostly) every morning on time. Since we were on the top floor of Plassman and faced the parking lot, they would also spend the start of class time at the window looking to see if the professor's car was in the lot or if they could see him pulling in. Whatever the so called protocol was for the amount of time you should wait for a late professor, these guys had it down to the second. Some days it was "(bleep),here he comes," and others it was a quick dash to the door and out of there.

No - someone has to love me. I enjoyed reading your post, sbu79. Your ability to brush off a childish insult with suitable decorum suggests that sociology class--and perhaps some of the others you took at Bona--was a case of time well spent.
