ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini has been named a quarterfinalist for the 2006 Brooks Wallace Award, which is presented to the NCAA Division I baseball Player of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation.
The Wallace Award semifinalists will be named on Sunday, May 21.
The 6-1, 240-lb. Pellegrini leads the Atlantic 10 in batting (.401), slugging percentage (.720) and on-base percentage (.503). He ranks second in the conference in RBI (53) and home runs (12). Pellegrini also has 14 doubles, 42 runs, six stolen bases and a team-high 28 walks.
The Willoughby, Ohio, native is within reach of St. Bonaventure's single-season records for home runs (14), hits (68; he has 63) and RBI (59).
Already a two-time All-Conference and All-Northeast Region selection, Pellegrini was named a pre-season All-American this year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Pellegrini has led the Bonnies to an overall record of 24-18 and second place in the Atlantic 10 at 16-7. St. Bonaventure, which has tied the school record for A-10 victories in a season, closes the regular season this week with a three-game series against Richmond beginning Thursday, May 18, at 3:00. The Bonnies have clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which will be played May 24-27 at Fordham University's Coffey Field.
