With Nebraska's head coach Barry Collier choosing an outsider as his new assistant over Tim Waller (Nebraska's director of basketball operations) should we be expecting Waller to be signing on with the Bonnies in the near future? Ex-Tar Heel set to join NU men's basketball staff BY CURT McKEEVER / Lincoln Journal Star Former North Carolina point guard King Rice apparently is set to join Barry Collier's men's basketball coaching staff at Nebraska. Rice, 36, would replace Reggie Rankin, who resigned in early April to accept a similar assistant's position at Dayton. According to two coaches close to the Nebraska search, including one applicant for the position, who asked to remain anonymous, Rice is the choice over three others who interviewed: Jerry Francis, a former assistant under Collier at Butler who recently resigned after going 29-55 the past three seasons at Prairie View A&M; Alvin "Pooh" Williamson, a four-year Tulsa assistant who served as interim head coach for the Golden Hurricane's final 22 games this season; and Tim Waller, the Huskers' director of basketball operations. Collier was unavailable for comment Monday. www.journalstar.com/articles/2005/05/24/huskerextra/doc4292b8ac04ece857387172.txt

King Rice is regarded as the best player ever from the Binghamton area, being on the only public school team that won the Federation Tournament. He started and ran the Tarheel offense for his junior and senior seasons, and was voted most outstanding senior his final year, the year the tarheels went to the Final Four. After playing in England he return became administartive assitant for North Carolina. He then had stints at Oregon, Illinois State and Providence College where he was in charge of recruiting. This is the kind of coach we should have been looking for to head our program in 2003.

King was busy running Rick Fox's business affairs which is why he left coaching during that same time. I believe he has been out of coaching for about 3 or 4 years now. He would have been a good top asst. although i don't think he would be paid anywhere near what I assume he gets at Nebraska.

Just wanted to point out the article referred to by Chuck was written May 24, 2005. Reggie Rankin was a member of the Dayton staff during the '05-06 season. King Rice was never hired at Nebraska. Jerry Francis was on the Nebraska staff during the past season replacing Coach Rankin. Assistant Coach Scott Spinelli left the Nebraska staff on May 8 of this year, a week after Tim Waller was seen in Olean with Solomon and Luhn.
