College rankings are a funny thing. I have been through the college search with my own children and found, for the most part, little validity in the discussion of "selectivity"
That said, in checking out SBU at the US News website (link below), I was happy to learn that the University is listed, based on the Fall 2005 freshman class, as "selective." In fact, SBU made the list of best Masters-level schools in the Northern Region and was rank ordered #27, behind Villanova (#1), Marist (#16) and Nazareth (#26). We are ahead of Canisius (#29), Gannon (#37) and SUNY Fredonia (#50). You'd be surprised by the other schools that are ranked below us.
There is a great deal more to consider than an isolated report in a single magazine. I understand that, although numbers have been down the last few years, a new degree program with the GW Med School has attracted almost 20 kids with SAT scores that would have gotten them into the most highly selective schools. That shows me that somebody in the administration has recognized some of the issues and is doing something about it.
I found it interesting how the posting on admissions standards turned into a discussion about the quality of our athletic conference. I fail to see the correlation, and at the peril of using a single source as a basis for my observation, I would invite you to look at the US News list. Perhaps someone can tell me how many of the schools ranked above us are in the largest power conferences.
Many of you are seeking a correlation that just isn't there.
What exists at SBU is unique and special for so many reasons. I am proud to be an alumnus, and I know that many people understand and value what our college is about.
Go Bona's!!
