Cleaning out the closet while monitoring all the moving and shaking in the Atlantic 10.
Isiah Carson’s departure from St. Bonaventure has reportedly led him to Miami of Ohio. According to the Daily Dayton News last month, the guard has signed on with the Red Hawks.
It’s not quite official yet, according to the Miami sports information department. The school has received his transfer release but is still waiting on one piece of paperwork.
Fired coach Danny Nee isn’t the only one departing Duquesne. So is a highly touted recruit and several of his former players.
Junior college star Hernol Hall has been released from his letter of intent and is free to sign with another school. Among those interested is Oklahoma.
Hall changed his mind after Nee’s assistant Charles Cunningham was fired with his boss.
Five DU scholarship players have also chosen not return and are expected to transfer. They are guards Chauncey Duke, and forwards’ DeVario Hudson, Brian Kelly, Sean McKeon and Ronnie Thomas.
The Bonnies are fortunate because they play the depleted Dukes twice next season.
Those at the top are also losing bodies. Talented guard Abdulai Jalloh and Saint Joseph’s are also parting ways.
Jalloh, who led the Hawks in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore last season asked for his release, meaning forward Rob Ferguson will be the only returning starter off last season’s 19-14 team.
Four of coach Phil Martelli’s incoming recruits are highly regarded guards, however. Another guard, Tasheed Carr has transferred to St. Joe’s from Iowa State and will be eligible after sitting next season.
Martelli will also have an old guard sitting next to him on the bench, as former NBA journeyman Doug Overton was hired as an assistant.
You also may remember Overton has a Philadelphia prep star playing along teammates Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble or from his days on the successful La Salle teams under Speedy Morris in the late ’80s and early ’90s.
George Washington’s Danilo Pinnock signed with an agent last week, meaning the junior can no longer withdraw as an early candidate for the NBA draft.
Pinnock’s teammate, junior Carl Elliott, and Saint Louis junior Ian Vouyoukas haven’t left school yet.
They declared as early candidates in April for the draft, but are still eligible to return to school because they haven’t signed with agents. They have until June 18 to withdraw.
None, even Pinnock, is projected to be selected in next month’s draft.
It appears that the Colonials, whether they have Pinnock and Elliott or not, will be snacking on fewer cupcakes next season.
A year after playing one of the weakest schedules in the nation, GW is slated to play Southern California in the John Wooden Classic. The other game will feature UCLA and Texas A&M.
Full non-conference schedules should be released soon.
