Softintheo - In your example above, you would actually be an employee of the toy company, and not the owner. Even as an employee of the hypothetical toy company, you don't think that as an employee there would be some sort of incentive to sell those toys? Even if there is not direct compensation, it would be in his best interest to sell those toys so his company doesn't go belly up. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a good thing Tim is trying to do for these kids, but the Rapids organization should be footing the bill and that's who Tim should be talking to. The fact that he's asking this message board instead of them leads me to believe he's doing their footwork, which is selling tickets using underpriveledged kids as a marketing device. Seems to me there are too many conflict of interest issues here to consider this a viable charity.

I had posted this earlier only to be deleted but why doesn't the team offer X% of the sale of season tickets thru this endeavor to a charity that helps inner city kids? Instead the team is keeping all the profits while using the kids to boost their revenue. Tim doesn't profit if you don't purchase season tickets? The team probably needs these sales to stay in operation. While Tim might not get a cut of tickets sold thru this idea, it will ensure another paycheck down the road by bringing in revenue to the team. PS: Bona91, one of my other posts that you deleted was quoted in an previous comment by Lumsdn, so in effect people can still read what I wrote. You might want to delete that post too since you deleted the original. Thanks. I was shocked after reading the quoted message that it was deleted. The inappropriate mother remark to that comment was ok, but your rational thought got axed. I was happy I was still able to read it, the comment made a lot of sense.

Color me suprised that the majority of the detractors to this idea are from Bizzaro Wagon World!! My box of Crayolas didn't have a 'Surprise' color in it. Anyhoo, I am not surprised that the today's first anti-Bevelator shot came from you. Tool. Back on topic: I liked the idea until season tickets were mentioned. They could have just as easily done a money, toy, or food drive that would benefit the kids. But instead, we're asked to buy one or two season tickets. Take the blinders off, people.

Personally I congratulate Tim and all of his work. Without knowing all of the details I would assume that Tim would be interacting with these kids and he could provide them with a role model figure as well as a constructive outlet for them. Which many of them might not have either and that alone is worth our support. Maybe we just don't know all of the details but it would be a shame if the Rapids were profiting off of his charity. It would be nice to see something along the lines of the Rapids are providing these tickets at below face value or something. I would have no problem donating to further Tim's work but I personally think that buying a face value ticket from a corporation might not be the best way to do that. But that's just my opinion and my money. I wonder if you can donate for some of the other programs that are mentioned in the post rather then the tickets? I think the money would go further in these endeavors. Again just my opinion and everyone is more then welcome to disagree with me if they choose.
P.S. Why does this always have to turn into a bevel vs this board fight. This is a serious topic and I don't even think it is appropriate to respond to dembonnies in this thread he is just trying to stir things up again.

I think the issue with DemBonnies is he doesn't understand that we are having an adult conversation here.....with him it's all basketball talk and be-liddling other groups, he has no time to discuss an issue and see it from different angles.
And to GoPadres. I do agree with you that as a GM he is truly only an employee of that organization; although, as GM I would go out on the limb to say you have more at stake than an average employee.
Again I don't want to let any of this financial mumbo-jumbo get anywhere near the real issue here....Tim is doing something to help kids and that is something that I respect and would be happy to help him with in any way I can.... but that for me won't include buying tickets.

First of all, I like the idea. Tim wants to help underprivledged kids from around the Buffalo area to be able to attend a higher level basketball game. He probably asked for some tickets to be donated and since they probably don't sell many tickets they told him no deal. So, the only way Tim could afford a bunch of tickets for the games would be to ask outsiders for funding help. They only way I see this as a negative is if some of the other players on his team or even across the league are trying the same thing with their alma mater. I'm guessing that this is just one of his things he got going though and it speaks well for the type of graduates that come from Bonas. I can see peoples point on the marketing scheme behind this though. Happens all the time across the country.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone who wouldn't think helping underprivledged kids isn't a good idea. I think the main issue is that if you are going to post a request like this on a message board, there should be more disclosure on who is going to profit from this deal. Are the Rapids selling these tickets at a discount? If not, does a share of the proceeds go to charity? Also, it should be clearly disclosed whether or not the folks selling these tickets are receiving any direct compensation for these sales.

I'm going to admit that I am probaby as cynical a person as you have ever met. but I am giving Tim Winn the benefit of the doubt on this one. All I know of Tim is what I have seen or read in interviews of him or in comments made by others. I may be naive, but his seriousness of purpose has always impressed me.
For me, there are 3 points here that support my feeling on this one. First, the comment in either the original post in this thread or in the post by TWinn that Tim realizes that his message might not stick for very long with the kids he gets involved with. One way to help the stickiness of the message is to keep involved with them and this program would seem to help with that.
The second is that I'm guessing that basketball is of more importance in the lives of the kids we're talking about here than any of us appreciate. So, getting to attend a game probably rates pretty highly for them. The fact that this is minor minor league ball should even help to reinforce Tim's main message.
The 3rd point is that I doubt anyone involved with this league is making any coin. These type of leagues exist on shoe strings. One bad move, and they can be gond tomorrow. The team probably has no funds to donate, and Tim appears to be looking for a way to tie together 2 endeavors he is involved in to the benefit of both. I think that is something short of a sin.

Come on Soft, you pretty much slow pitched that one to him with the spelling. You know if you belong to the Bevel it's a must to spell check everything over here cause your going to be judged on your grammer. Don't give them easy points. And no raw nerve here It just gets a little tiring that every thread either degenerates into a Bevel bashing thread or if Bonas should join the MAAC or not thread. People were discussing their opinions in a serious manner on something that pertained to a approved topic of discussion on this board. Isn't that what you wanted or do you only want people to discuss things if they share your viewpoint? If you want to disagree with them by all means do so but you know what calling out an entire group of people does. It results in a deleted thread.

On a side note, it was interesting to see Andy Bush listed as a member of the Rapids. It brings back fond memories of one of the highlights of my basketball career, beating Andy Bush and his 6'9" brother in the annual Coudersport 3on3 tournament. Those were the days...

Nobody is being forced to buy any tickets. Charity comes in many forms including the essentials of food and shoes, but it can come in the form of entertainment and inspiration as well.
If you like this concept, go ahead and participate. If not, who cares?
Tim and Marquee - good job. Thanks for letting us know what you are up to.

Not only did you do a great job of editing my message board spelling error you also taught me a new word. Demarcation - The setting or marking of boundaries or limits (for anyone who doesn't know). I take back anything I said about you DemBonnies you are much more of an adult than me. The fact still stands though that you rolled into what was a completely civil conversation and called me and Cosmo out..... oh right, Cosmo and I (almost made another grammar error, I'm sure you would love to point out) for being detractors. I've never driven a tractor, but I do enjoy your commentary on issues you have no input on other than to make dumb comments. So no raw nerve here....actually kind of expect it. Keep up the good work. And please be sure to correct any spelling errors I may have made. PS Keystone, check out your spelling or grammar. Unless you were referring to Grammer, IN 47236; then you would be correct.

A e-mail blast or a thread on "other board" calls all the faithful to rush here and rip Tim Winn and his idea up. I point out the absurdity of it and I am a trouble maker. Wow---I'm soooo served I would just like to state that there was never a call to the "faithful to rush here (from the Bevelwagon) and rip Tim Winn and his idea up." All that was said was the original post here seemed a little shiesty. No one mocked the cause just had more questions which have since been answered. If you are going to quote the "other board" get your facts straight. Have a nice day!
